1. Set Modview according to the tutorial found at the top of the Mapping, Modeling and Skinning Forum (It's a sticky). 2. No. You paint over the TEXTURE. It's best to use a new layer for this. 3. Whenever you paint over the texture, it's up to you to keep the rust/ nails, etc. Just remember that the new texture has to look realistic, with proper shading and lighting. 4. copy your new texture and paste it over the original, then stretch it over the part you want to reskin. 5. Just paint over the colored parts and leave the black background alone. 6. Shaders are text files that assign different properties to the textures. Look for shader tutorials for Q3 or SOF2. 7. Use a shader. Download a weapon with a shader and ask the creator if you can use his shader. See how it's written and where the "chrome" or "env" texture is and try to figure out how to make your own.

Skinning is easy. Skinning WELL is pretty hard.

i dont get your answer for questio number 4. i tried this: i select like for example, the wooden handle of the ak with the lasso tool. suppose i want like a texture to go right in the selected area. then i make a texture in a new file for example, a square. is this right so far? then what do i do next? how can i like use the lasso tool and create the exact outline of the wood handle on the texture? and then copy and paste?

i dont think i will use shaders. im a novice.

Use the polygonal lasso, not the free hand lasso. Another way to do it is in quick mask mode. select the area with the marquee tool, go in quick mask mode (Q) and then the selected area will turn red. Pick the eraser tool(E) and erase the parts you dont want selected. Go back to normal mode and your selection will be clean.

For the nightmare skins, I just painted a new texture from scratch using the originals as templates. Most of the nightmare skins are done from scratch. To paint the other sides, just repeat the operation, pasting the new texture over the right areas. Skinning weapons involves a lot of trial-and-error. :)
