Patterns? If you use patterns to skin, you're doing it wrong. No patterns, no filters. What I mean is, you can't take a pattern or filter, apply it to the whole texture and call it a skin. You can use a combination of several different tolls and techniques to achieve better results. How much experience do you have with PSP? If you're new to it, you need to learn how to use it WELL before making anything good. It's like the old saying, you need to learn how to walk before you can run. Try and get as many tutorials as you can and take notes, so you can remember them later. Practice a couple of hours every day until you feel comfortable. Lern about selections, blending modes, filters, layers, hue/saturation, contrast, levels, etc. Also, before you decide to publish anything, get as much feedback as you can and LISTEN to what others think. Arrogance, ignorance and bad skins walk hand in hand. Last, but not least, you don't need to make skins to practice. Take a photo and mess with it. take 2 photos and blend them together. Make somebody a clown or take parts of a picture and put them in a different picture. You get the idea. I'm not trying to discourage you, but skinning WELL is not easy; It's hard, but very rewarding. ;) P.S. I don't use PSP8, but Photoshop 7.
