In GTK-Radiant What is "HINT" and "CAULK" used for? What do they do?:uhm:
caulk is defult brushs texture
the caulk texture, (you find it under TOOLS) do you use normaly. for instance when you make a wall, and the player will only see 1 side of that wall, than it is not nessesary that all the sides have a texture. that will take a lot of FPS, (FRAMES PER SECOND) what makes your game very slow. caulk is invisseble in the gam, you only see the textures what you put on it in the game. but the player can't walk trough calk. when you like a wall where you can put on a texture, but where the player can walk trough, than you use the shoot invisseble texture.
the Hint is something else, hint is used for splitting up your map, also to get the FPS up. for instance, you have 2 very large rooms with a hallway between it, in both rooms you put a big hint brush, but so that the hint brush touches the wall, but doesn't come trough it, (hint may not come in contact with the VOID, the emptenis). when the player is in 1 room, all the other things in the second room doesn't have to be there at that time, because you don't see it anyhow. so, the hintbrush, where you standing in will make it so that you only see what is in the hintbrush, walk trough to the next hint brush, you see only what is in that hint brush. and when you are between the 2 hint brushes, than you see all.
but..... i have work a lot with MohaaRadiant where i did use it a lot, (only is it called there Visleafgroups), so i know how to work with it. but i can't get it working with sof2, i'm using gtk 1.2.13, 1.3.7.dev, and sdk.
so, for me it doesn't work,
i don't think it works like that in sof2 spy... it's not the same as the visleafgroups i think.. it's hard to explain, but i found a good tutorial for you http://mapdesign.ravencommunity.net/mapping/hint.htm
this also explains caulk and clip brushes (also a very nice technique!)
Jesus!! I give up, this mapping stuff is just way to confusing! Ill just leave you mappers to do the mapping. Thinks for the help anywayz.
lol :D you don't need to use it, hint is not really necessary, as long as vis blocking is good in your map... and using caulk on all sides that are not drawn can increase fps by about 10-20...
and yes it is confusing... i still don't really know how to use hint well :S
thanks for the tut site you adviced l.banana, i will look in to that. could react soner, was a bit sick, had to leave the pc alone for a HOLE day!! (autch!) leon
there's more nice stuff, just look on mapdesign.ravencommunity.net
