I've seen this problem before. Just hit the ESC key after a minute and that might get the program running.

Most likely your firewall, i had the same error, im using Zonealarm, and when i use to start game it wouldnt get past loading, i could move mouse etc, but as u can't minamize u can't see the pop asking from your firewall to allow the connection, so u need to add it manally to your firewall, and u said it worked before, but not after patchs? reason being is the sofmp2.exe is edited, and the firewall need's to be updated as well.
