I'm too cool to Post

I hope someone can help me with this issue: I have SOF1, which always ran adequately on my laptop (HP Pavilion N5350 [850MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB HD]; Windows ME; Savage video card w/ 8MB RAM); however, since the computer came back from warranty service at HP's faciility, I have not been able to load a game. I have done numerous uninstalls and re-installs, with and without WONSwap (it will not take DirectX7 as there is a "later" version on my PC), and the installations seem to proceed without a hitch. However, when I try to start a game, the screen rapidly flickers over most of its surface, mostly black, as it seemingly attempts to open a number of windows for 5 to 10 seconds, then the flickering stops, reverts to desktop wallpaper, and then an error message appears: "SOF has caused an error in . The program will now close." It goes on to say that if the error persists, I should try re-starting my computer; there are no further details available for diagnosis. Re-starting, however, does nothing for the problem.
The one odd thing that occurs now during installations is the program's failure to require that I enter the registration code -- previously, any installation or re-installation made that request. Could this have anything to do with the odd error I'm getting?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, Mark
