Hello everyone, for many years now I have been playing SOF2 and it has always been plenty of fun until recently when I realized that it is almost impossible to find servers which are not using bots. Come on people, the whole point of playing online is to actually play with other living, breathing and most importantly, thinking beings. If I wanted to play with bots I would do it in single player or if there was no Internet connection at all.

I am not the type of person who makes a fuzz about stuff but this has become increasingly annoying. You can almost call it an epidemic. I can imagine that I am not the only one who feels frustrated about joining several servers just to find a bunch of retarded characters bouncing against walls and firing shots in all directions. Like I said, I would not complain if it wasn’t for the fact that the vast majority of servers seem to be using them.

Is there a way to filter out servers using bots? If not it would be great if someone could invent some type of mode to avoid them. Maybe with this poll server administrators can rethink if they really want bots running in their servers.

Bye all.

People run bots because the amount of players has declined. they run them to show the server should still be active, and to allow people to play while they are waiting for people to show up. Not everyone wants to sit around waiting for a few people to show up and play. It is now Hundreds of players to the thousand servers ( exagerated) where as it was the other way around in the past ... Many servers sit empty waiting to be used ... Again...

As soon as bots are programmed... they will be used. Take a look at CS source: enough players that are active but still 1000's of servers with bots on it.

I totally agree upon the fact that it's much better to play with/against human beings: much more fun. Find and bookmark the servers/time you will find people on servers only. For instance in Europe: the GameServers.net publics have a couple of old-fashioned normal damage + no bot servers running, and on saturday night there's some nice deathmatch action on Axis (sofplayers.co.uk). I believe Goldrush beta testers have a meeting on Sunday and so on you will have to find the servers if you don't wanna meet bots ;)

If you use the ingame browser, you can check view server info before joining, and if you see a lot of "inhuman ping times" you know you will see bots there so you can avoid joining. I dunno about other ways to filter servers with bots.

Best is to use bot_minplayer for servers like 4 or 5 bots, for every new player 1 bot disconnect :d

Well it’s kind of sad to see SOF2 dying-out as players move to other games, but I think there has to be some type of consolidation with the servers. By this I mean that server administrators should begin hosting other games or doing something else to attract players to their servers. Take Return to Castle Wolfenstein for example, I like to play this very old game, but the amount of servers hosting has trickled down to about 20 + servers and you will always find real players and no bots. Okay so maybe there are no bots in RTCW but I am sure that they would not be included since there are always enough players for the amount of servers available.

My advice to server administrators would be to use other methods to attract players instead of doing like everyone else and just adding bots. For example, if a server runs capture the flag games and it is always empty, then maybe they should host deathmatch games with RPGs and all weapons included to make it unique and fun. I usually play CTF but once in a while I like to play deathmatch in a crazy server with new maps and all weapons. If nothing seems to work then I really think there is no point hosting this game and maybe hosting a new one should be seriously considered. At least that is what I would do.

CYA.

well i run 2 servers. 1 has lower gravity server with all weapons and has bots. and is always populated by real players. so much so i have admins from diffrent time zones. 2 is a normal gravity server and without explosive weapons and is the one chicane mentioned its a goldrush 3.0 beta test server and is populated on just a few days mainly sundays when we meet and it to has bots. on both server the players ask if we can increase the bots. this is because with the goldrush system (diffrent routes for each gametype) the bots are a challenge. and do follow the gametype objectives. they will ctf they will do everything they are supposed to do for each gametype. i know roc has 1 route for every gametype and i can understand how that would not be that good. but not all servers who run bots are the same.

It all depends on the bot, As Goody stated "People including myself like bots that offer a challenge" So the badder the bot the more I like what they bring to the game.

It doesn't matter what server you run. If you look at the server browser, you will see just as many DM or TDM or CTF etc...... just as empty as the rest of them. If you run a CTF server and it is empty, and you switch it to DM, chances are, it will be just as empty as before.

You have to advertise, you have to pull people in. You have to give them an atmosphere worth playing in. I waged one of the most aggressive advertising campaigns seen on these forums for a former clan to date.

People came in and would state they saw the advertisement. You have to make friends with other clans. Invite them to play and do the same on their servers.

It isn't just about Renting a server and making a map rotation. That is most deffinitely not the end of it. Bots are not added just to attract players. It is added so that , whilst you are sitting there waiting for people to join, you have something to do.

Yes Rocmod has one botpath and so on. But that doesn't mean it can't be changed. Lazy server admins allow it to be crap. :D

those 2 lines say it all. running a successful server takes work and time. it also depends on you. and how you greet and welcome the players that do connect. if you nice and helpful they will return with there friends and add you to favs. if your nasty they will tell there friends and word gets round.

I run my Clan's 2nd server with bots! I have my bots using 4 different weapons, and execute a different bot set for each map. I created a 78 bots and group them into 6 each. I so can theme bots to battle on maps. I also made the 1st half of the bots that load a higher level. So as more humans come in the lesser skill bots stay. For fewer humans they have the better bots also to deal with. A good bot route also helps! Tricky2UFellow@hotmail.com
