If anyone is interested in my view on Payback then I've written a review with plenty of pictures. It's in .pdf and is 1.11 Mb.
Well sounds like you feel like the rest of us Infeq. Just must have been to hard to listen to the community and make it into what we wanted.

they should have looked at what SOF2 was and made payback into something like that instead of a half assed first person shooter that is apparently from a console game and converted to pc. probably didnt do it due to COD4 being released and didnt want to hurt sales on COD4 though if they had released payback made properly / the right way and it was earlier then COD4's release or after and it worked and was what we all wanted i would have waited and bought it.
The time the games were worked on and who worked on them were two different entities. Aside from that fact, the game wasn't ( and isn't meant) meant to be Soldier of Fortune 3, it was originally named Mercenaries Wanted.
The game is a console port ... Oh well. People have moved on.

it still carries the name SoF maybe I should make pong (with some gore) and call it SoF: PongBack?
Actually, it carried the name Mercenaries Wanted. But seeing as activision had Sof shelfed, they used the name to sell a crappy port.
