firstly ive played sof2 for about a year ...not a noob when it comes to playing..but i need help with setting up a server. (v.1.00) I have tried sof2runner. 2/3 diff. versions, admin mod, rpm mod a &b. My computer is not a piece of crap either. I have broadband int. connection.. (1mb+) good upload and good download I start the server, i join, someone joins, & within ten mintues their ping sky rockets, 999 ping, and spec, and then time out. I have norton antivirus, i disable it when i start the server, also i tried opening the ports that it uses, 1080,20100,20101. Cannot figure out why they lag??? I set the max_rate @ 5000-10000 max_ping 200-500 Do those really matter? I NEED HELP..ive spent about 6 months, reading, downloading, experimenting. Is it just my internet connection is to slow?? Thx for help!

meganerdblue I set the max_rate @ 5000-10000 max_ping 200-500 Do those really matter?

It might help if you put in the correct commands:

sv_maxrate 5000 sv_maxping 150

Please not that the value used with sv_maxrate is the bandwidth given to EVERY player on your server... 5000 = apx 5kB of your uploadspeed.

A good sv_maxrate for the players is 10,000 (this is apx 10kB per player). So when you have an upload of 1 mbit = 128kB (in theory) then you can host a server of 128/10 = 12 player (again, in theory)...

It all depends on your uploadspeed (downloadspeed doesnt matter when running a server), and on how stable the connection is...

I would also check routers and firewall settings (some will lag server regardless) to make sure they correctly include forwarding to your cpu UDP 20100-20112.

i have hosted my (personal server) for 22 people upload of 512.

and it only lagged when one of my clansman from madrid spain joined..lol

i checked the firewall stuff...opened all the possible ports and still there is lag when ONE person joins! and changed the sv_maxrate and maxping

STILL LAG!!! i seriously have troubleshooting this problem for about 6 months now and i am about to give up.

any other suggestions

again, it is all about the uploadspeed of your connection... what kind of connection do you have? how many player slots does the server have? what is the sv_maxrate setting of the server?

^ listen to this guy :bows: what is your upload speed? go to www.dslreports.com/stest and find out. Do the test nearest you if ya can. Most home cable systems, and low end DSL setups cannot handle a gaming server running more than 8 clients.

MerrickDSi have hosted my (personal server) for 22 people upload of 512. and it only lagged when one of my clansman from madrid spain joined..lol

seems like he has about the same parameters ...but i am betting his provider has "capped" his usage for it. they won't tell you if they do this or not ...most do not allow it at all(hosting servers on Residential lines).

22 player on a 512 connection? That cant be a 512kbit conection, right? 512kbit = 64kByte... even with a low sv_maxrate of 5000 you can only host a server for max 12 players :eek:

I wish i could tell. The idea was July 2004, but we didnt make it :(

Goldrush 1.4 is for 99.9% done (some ideas move to 1.5 coz both coders need a break). But there are a few small but annoying bugs (like status of suspended admins/referees get resetted back to admin/player after loading a new map) that i cant seem to fix myself (Buu made the adminsystem, i did the referee part but that is based on the adminsystem) so i will have to wait for Buu's return. Problem is that Buu is moving to another country: new house, new job, new internetconnection (i hope that doesnt as much time as here in The Netherlands), etc...

But that doesnt mean i am doing nothing... atm i am building a thirdperson mode (easy) but i wanna try to do it WITH a crosshair (hard :p)
