"Dragonfly and Activision just unveiled the official site and a brand new CG trailer for their upcoming 18+ MMOFPS Soldier of Fortune Online. The elements of destruction and violence in Soldier of Fortune Online, which is based on the video game - Soldier of Fortune: Payback, are integrated for the sake of market demands, and the in-game fights among the various mercenaries around the world are also very impressive."
You can see more on youtube.
I decided that a 'reaction post' reflecting my thoughts while reading would best express my feelings about this...

Hmm no the post is new and the text doesn't look familiar. Interesting :)

A MMOFPS, also interesting...

Awwsomeee, they must mean THE Soldier of Fortune; the very first SoF game that made us love the concept. Back to basics, yeah. I even dare hope to have the hardcore brutal gore and death scenes in the multiplayer game once again.
Wait, what  Did it say that? let me read once again: 'P.a.y.-b.a.c.k'... That was odd...
Did these people at Activision just totally not get the message after Payback was unleashed upon the fans of the Soldier of Fortune games?? Could it be possible that they completely overheard the outcry from the community once the game... no, once 'it' was released? What world do they live in?? Might they actually enjoy insulting us with the total disregard for quality that Payback demonstrated?

Oh, maybe it's a joke of some sort... 'market demands', hmm yeah ok, that was a good one.

Haha, yeah alright. It's funny when you think of how impressed we were with the fights with Payback. (yes, I mean 'with'). Here's a link to a review, in case you are fortunate enough to have forgotten about it by now. And here's an other one.
With compliments like "one of the most frustrating shooters of the year" and "gaming's most bugged FPS ever" attached to it, I can totally see WHY you would want to keep that name alive and base a whole new game upon it, in stead of the 2 first games that the fans actually liked
Maybe I'll bother to visit that site and watch the trailer some day, if I'm in a bad mood and want to be reminded that things has been worse. - When Payback was released.
I completely agree. It's being developed in Korea and is in closed Beta I believe. IMHO I doubt, thankfully, that western consumers will ever see this game. Payback was an epic fail. But since it has the SOF name attached to it I figured I'd pass it along. Too bad Activision can't see the forest for the trees because with all the technology in the years since double helix was released, they could make a downright awesome LEGITIMATE sequel. The one silver lining to this news is that somewhere, someone in Activision hasn't completely forgotten about Soldier of Fortune. But you know what they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I put something up on Soffiles about this today and I have asked our guys on the main site to contact Activision about this new game to see if we can get some solid facts.
A mmo based on SoF is a brilliant idea but thye just picked the wrong one. I guess activision is just trying to get every last penny out of the franchise with minimum investment. A shame really because looking at the trailer and a few ingame videos it looked fast and could have been quite fun if it had been in Mr Mullins world. Full server on any of the stock maps in Sof and Sof2 are still some of my fondest memories of gaming. Having a none stop frag fest with maybe some missions thrown it to boot in SoF 2 world would have kept me glued to my PC for months and probably seen a lot of the old faces return.
Activision have become very good at dangleing a carrot only to destract us from the kick in the nuts that usually follows from them.
I appreciate it. Would be nice knowing whats planned for this game, but I think we all know. I only posted because it has the SOF name pinned to it. On the upside I have been playing COD black OPS, and it reminds me of payback but not quite as lame. Funny, kind of makes you wonder if Alex Mason from COD is related to Thomas Mason. I agree with your news post about it being too cartoony. What needs to happen is a mod on a new games engine, (bf bc2, half life 2, or cod mw1's) to have the true feeling of sof. Kind of like how theres a mod team recreating half life one for hl2s engine, someone needs to create a mod that retells sof2. but im a thinker and not a doer. I miss and love the sof series dearly but I guess some things must wither.
