Is there a way to keep ambient sounds playing as long as the unit is operation?

The are always plaing thats why they are ambient sounds. You just have to be close enough to hear them.

Whenever some ships are a certain distance away from the nearest starbase, the sounds stop.

Let me see if I can explain what Shadowadm is talking about. The Armada engine, and every game engine ever made, can only handle a certain number of sounds at once. If more than that number (lets say 32) are being played, then it will only play the most recent ones and the others are simply not rendered. The problem is, sounds that play constantly, such as ambient sounds from nebulae or vessels, don't come back on once the number of sounds goes back under the limit. If you want to test it yourself, have a large battle near a red nebula in stock. If you hang around the nebula after the battle is over, you'll notice that the ambient sound from the nebula is no longer playing.
