I download Aad recently released Romulan Station pack (romulanstationpack (1.0)) and observed something rather interesting. First, as many know Aad typically includes the Milkshape files with his downloads (thanks mate). WEll, I opened the Milkshape file and exported the Romulan Station out as an A1 sod for use in Armada 1. I made no correction to his texture files that included Alphas and was quite suprised to find that everything worked fine. Normally, one must delete the Alpha layers in order for it to work properly but not this time. I then went and snagged his Romulan ship and did the same and theset too worked with the Alpha layers intact. Still scratching my head on that one but thought it noteworthy enough to report.

Maybe the material settings for the mesh groups are originaly all set to ignore alpha's. ;)

That shouldn't effect it at all. I always do that to hardpoint and the lightmaps show up fine in game. Perhaps it's due to Aad doesn't set the material settings to black and white, his Ambient is usually dark grey instead of black and I think it's his Diffuse is often light grey instead of white.

But yes it's rather unusual and somewhat of a break through in modding if one can figure it out. :)

You're right that he doesn't change them to black and white, though if I remember right, they aren't grey either.

I think they're quite simply 'default', so whatever the standard texture for when in Milkshape is, that is what gets exported with his models. :)

Well, I looked at the material settings and found something of interest. In the materials naming he used _!phong at the end of the material name with nothing before it. In other words, something like this Material01_!phong. So I went into Milkshape created a new file (a simple cube) and applied an alpha-based texture using just the standard settings and named it Material01_!phong. I exported it out as an A1 sod and then looked at it in storm 3d tool. The entire texture was visible. Next, I deleted the _!phong from the material name and reexported it out. This time when I looked at it in Storm 3d tool, I saw what i was used to seeing...only the lite parts of the texture were visible. The rest was basical invisible. Now, I am almost positive I had tried this before.

Anyone else what to test this out and report there results?

We are both right they are default, which in turn are actually grey.

The default settings:

  • Ambient: Hue 160, Lum 48 (Dark Grey)
  • Diffuse: Hue 160, Lum 192 (Light Grey)
  • Specular: Hue 160, Lum 0 (Black)
  • Emissive: Hue 160, Lum 0 (Black)

I would know as previous the YY models were like this as we weren't using lightmaps. However I and Jetfreak have been adding lightmaps to the models due to the mod's part one getting close to release on MSFC.
