Concerning Minelayers in A2
Hi everyone. I am a lucky guy and I want to share this with you. Why lucky? Because I had an idea recently that might add something to the A2 gameplay: A decent Minelayer. We all have seen the episodes where some enterprise had trouble with minefields, ran into a mine blockade or such. Not to forget that missuse of the defiant as a minelayer. So we could consider this as quite-canon (for all you purists out there). Unfortunately, the armada2 game handles mines as something minor and not so tricky. The 8472 mine, the Defiant mine, a gravity mine for the Klingons. And thats about it. Effectively blocking the way for enemy fleets, a variety of special mines, more tactics for defense play - well, I thought it was about time for this. And about being lucky: I persuaded FahreS to make a fantasic ship and mines for me to put something together thay might work (I am not sure if the poor guy will ever do me a favour again as I was a pain in the butt, but hey, that's worries for tomorrow). So without further ado I present the "Blowball Class".
From the Tooltip: "The Blowball Class is the Federation Minelayer. During the Dominion War it became clear to Starfleet Command, that a specialized ship would fulfill the task much better than the sporadically used cruisers and destroyers. Replicating different mines onboard demanded a big power unit, strong hull and shields made the ship very rugged but slow. It is considered by Starfleet Captains to be butt-ugly, but a valuable weapon for strategic purposes. The Blowball Class can defend itself against weak enemies, but its best chance to survive is taking the punches and wait for help."
Equipped with some Pulse Phasers and (of cause) the Fed Mine as a special weapon its classlabel is that of a carrier/shipyard. It has some nice easter egg surprises to offer, brilliantly done by Fahres as well. At the moment giving the mines some working special weapons is what I am doing (do you notice? all the fine things in this mod are by FahreS, all the problems are caused by me. I am sure FahreS himself thought that from the start. But he is just THAT nice).
The Blowball Class will soon come to some FF-site near you, in Version 1.0 equipped with four different mines, based on stock special weapons. Have a guess for now which I selected. I hope - nah, I am sure- this will give people some ideas and you guys will come up with some better and mindpuzzeling versons of your own mines in no time. Feel free to do so please, all I want by this is to get some underdeveloped part of A2 into full gear.

Very nice idea, and the model looks great! Minelayers would add another tactic to the game which has been very underdeveloped before now. Excellent work! :)
The ship design leaves a lot to be desired, but makes up for the overall concept. Cant wait to try this thing out.

Yup. It ain't a ship for you wing-enthusiasts:). Again: that is exactly how I wanted it to be made. A workhorse, robust and butt-ugly. None of this shiney exploration vessels, just pure german engineering...sort of.
Well theres not much engineering involed in making a flying brick but it does have the vurtue of looking like the holo ship from insurrection. Overall the idea is first class and I can't wait to see exactly how it's been executed.

I tried 10 ships designs or something until he was happy^^
I think the next question is when do we get it?
So then it begs the question, what will the mine layers look like for the other races or should only the feds have them. I do like the concept and hope you consider extending the idea to the A1 community as well. Look forward to seeing how it is implemented and executed in game play.
@FahreS So what you'er saying is it was hard work just making the ship ugly enough for ameba and we should be glad you are a patceint man.:D
