Theres been a way of importing any SOD file for ages now. I use it myself. Very interesting little program called Ultimate Unwrap3d. Also imports and exports hardpoints, sprites and emitters, no hierarchy required. Since it has so many importers/exporters available, I can open a .mod from SFC II, rotate it to face the right way for Armada, give it the same set of HP/Em/Spr as another model, export to A1 format, open in the A1 SOD Tool, move the hardpoints, save, reinport into Ultimate Unwrap3d, import the hardpoints, export as A2 format. Et voila, ANY SOD, MOD or myriad of other formats to SOD working, with hardpoints and emitters and everything, (although i dont use emitters much myself) in about 30 mins, even including texture conversion using Photoshop. Also does mesh welding and poly redux pretty well. Kind of makes the whole "arrg what about people using MS3d or another program to steal our models!!!" arrgument mute, don't it? People could have done it for atleast 3 years, thats how long i've had UU3d.

now now people, don't be selfish, OK i didn't put any mod here yet but i am preparing to do so, and if someone wants to take it and improve it, why not, we all have a common goal here, to improve a game for the whole community, and fixing things only goes towards that goal, in my opinion it should only be mentioned who bilt the original and it shouldn't be used in contest without the owners permission.

Well I am not going to comment on the importer as I am still firmly against it due to only recently a member of A2Files had the nerve to steal one of the 2A-A2 teams models, do unauthorised edits to the mesh, re-texture and then release it with even asking for permission. Further more he released the MS3D version of the ship which was also completely unauthorised.

I don't mind people playing around with my models, but when it comes to publicly releasing them, I would like them to actually ask first rather then assume. I think one of the reasons why this member did what he did, is he knew I wouldn't allow it due to not being trustworthy anyone after the way he acted on MSFC getting himself banned.

So I continue to stand by my original decisions. Plus I never needed the importer to learn how to kitbash or model. I learnt it myself by asking people if I could get copies of their models to work with. The old fashion trial and error do it yourself is how you really learn the right way. Plus there are plenty of SFC models that can easily be imported if you need reference or practice kit-bashing.

But yes I've said enough, I don't want to see this 3 year old issue coming back, it's been brought up way too many times over the years.

Submit Your Files to Armada II Files - Armada 2 Files

submission rulesYou must have permission to use other peoples material, unless the author has publicly stated that permission does not need to be sought. More information on this point is available HERE.

It's four years old in a few months. Doesn't time fly?

Everybody that needs or wants the importer gets given it from someone in the community if pretty much anybody trusts them. The point of the matter is that anybody in the community can easily lay their hands on it, but people outside the community who only want to rip off models can't easily do so.

I was favour of changing this policy many years ago, however the resulting community reaction dissuaded me and I have to admit that the existing status quo works pretty well.

Wow - I thought I remembered this thread being locked... locked away in the classified vault, marked DO NOT OPEN...EVER... ON PAIN OF NASTY NASTY KLINGON DEATH... (the sexy kind...)

I have to admit - I agree with Majestic on this one - general release to the community at large will probably result in mass rip off of models - its the human condition - people will try to get off with as much as they can, and will continue to do so until caught. Its sad, I know.

Although - I know of several people who in fact have this exporter / importer, and they would never, NEVER, rip off anyone's stuff - so I guess we aren't all bad, huh?

I guess the situation will always be thus;

A2 files will never host this file MSFC will never host this file AFC will probably never host this file

I, personally am not against people having this file - and its controlled distribution between friends, who can be trusted. But general release... nah...

Unfortunatly I have to agree. I've seen to many instances of theaft in verious moding comunities. Its a damn shame to cause you would think people would be mature enough not to do that. They never get away with it.
