Actually Achilles. Thats not 100% strictly true. As long as the model has the ROOT node only then all will be fine. It doesn't even need the complete hierarchy.

do ppl actually bother with the root node when not doing a hierarchy?

Yep. I ALWAYS include it as part of the hierarchy.

If someone goes to all the trouble to make a model, why wouldn't they include a complete node heirarchy? The model will look that much more impressive with all the lights, damage sprites and especially weapons that fire from the points on the model that coincide with the specific ship class and also for photons, having HPs facing the right direction so that fwd torps fire fwd and aft torps fire aft, etc. I've downloaded so many .SOD models that had HPs that were not in the right places, ie, a build point that was intersecting a major part of the structure, or aft photon bays that faced forward. It doesn't take that much more effort.

well as far as I know milkshape dont export much of a hierarchy. also some ppl dont use any, as default I include a full hierarchy but for things like nebulas, mines, beams etc I wouldn't use anything other than a few command nodes.

No, I'm talking about strictly ships and stations. Milkshape has an excellent node export, at least for Armada. What a lot of people don't know, is that there are importers and exporters that work better with one version or another, even though the file doesn't specify. Right now, I'm using MS v. 1.6.2. Even though 1.6.5 is available. The plugins that I have didn't want to export the hardpoints correctly. But they work great with 1.6.2 So that's what I stuck with. I can set up everything with milk. Lights Plasma streams, Steam, Weapon HPs. I caqn even rotate HPs around so that if you have a HP for a pod on a research station or you want to use those big illumination lights for the hull like in the ST films when the enterprise leaves drydock, you can do that also.
