Guten tag all. I remember, a while back, I made a few... well, to be honest, really crappy mods. .Odf changes, mostly. Just because I couldn't do textures, or anything like that. Well, I still can't do anything like that, but I have something I think will be enjoyed. I began playing Armada 2 again lately (Art of War, hell yeah!) and I was thinking about all the changed things... We've changed ships, races, GUIs, buildbuttons... pretty much everything. And then when I looked in the Media section, I realized that there has never been a music pack. So, I am putting my collection of Star Trek soundtracks to use in making a music overhaul pack. (*Almost) Everything is replaced. The shell music, all of the races, everything. I only have one full track left to fill (8472) and all of the small (fifteen, thirty seconds, those ones). Some of the tracks (like the shell music and Cardassians) are made up of one song, but others (Like the Borg and Federation) are compilations and mixes of various songs. The smallest one is three minutes fourty-five seconds and the largest about four minutes. At the earliest, I will be done tonight, the latest, tomorrow night. I look forward to hearing your opinions on it, like what I could improve, change or rearrange, and if there is enough interest, I'll be willing to continue upgrading and changing it. *I am not making separate songs for the Campaign and Instant Action races. Both modes will have the same song. If there is enough interest and a desire to change it, I will.

Sounds cool, we can use some new tunes. I'm looking forward to it.

Sounds good, I've played around with changing them, but my debate was always do I go orchestral Trek and SW music? maybe use tracks from indiana jones, pirates of the carib., and Starship Troopers... or do I slap in some badass rock? Definitealy looking forward to this

You will need to own the copyright on the music if you want us to host it. The law applies as much to filefront as it does to youtube etc. :uhm:

Well then, it appears I am out of luck. I do however, count three files in the Media section that have been uploaded without 'owning the copyright' and simply gave credit. I'm wondering why they are there if they are breaking the rule you have told me about? EDIT: And, now that I think about it... one of the Ferengi full race mods has a part of a song I am using for mine, and the guy who made that certainly does not have the copyright. Is this a new rule, or did I just miss something?

It shouldn't be a new rule. Because this is the way things have always been done, before the Internet and such. The only songs which can be legally freely distributed and used without permission are those marked "P.D." which stands for Public Domain. Just because someone else did something which is incorrect in the past is a poor reason to put yourself at risk. And it would be you at risk. The Digital Rights Management people are everywhere and looking hard to ensure no one uses "their" music without their permission or compensating them. If they'll sue someone over loading music from their laptop to their iPod, can we be far behind on the target list? It is absurd but they have somewhat of a point.

Does this suck? Yes, it does. Is it fair? No. And not just to whom you think. The person who originally wrote the music, and the artist(s) who performed it deserve some type of compensation for their work. Us handing out free copies of their music doesn't pay them for it. Have you ever gone to work and told your boss that today you'd work for free? Not really fair to ask someone else to do so, either. A job is a job rather it is dogcatcher or rock star. And everyone deserves to be paid for what they do at work.

However, all is not lost. Perhaps you could post a listing of the music you use for us to see. That may be legal although I am unsure. Freyr may know or someone else may. PM and ask and if it is a go, then post away. I, for one, am always interested in what kind of music players listen to as their fleets smash into the enemy.

Er... No offense, but I was just wondering. Nothing more than that, really. I know I can't upload the files.

I think the admins are much more sensitive to copyright issues now because it has stirred up the community so many times before. I like that they nip these problems in the bud before they spill out into the usual, non productive, spam war.

As for your mod, you may need to remake it but the idea is sound (har har).... There are plenty of free to use music sites on the net and any music over 50 years old is also free to use... at least in this country I think.

Armada II Files submission rules haven't changed substantially for a long while, and the last change was only really adopting our rules for the rest of the network, which meant we lost a few little bits giving example readmes etc.

The relevant part of the submission rules hasn't changed since day one of the network:-

Submission rules Welcome to Armada 2 Files and thanks for considering hosting your file with us. We will not accept any files whose contents seem legally questionable; this includes files that embed a hacked executable or include copyrighted materials used without explicit consent/permission e.g. ripped off from an other game/mod. In order to host your file we have a couple of requirements:-
  • You must have permission to use other peoples material, unless the author has publicly stated that permission does not need to be sought.
  • A readme in plain text (.txt) describing what your file is/does and how to install it. Give credit where credit is due.
If these are missing then we regret that we cannot publish your file.

The degree that the rules have been enforced to has varied with the competence of different administrations over the years. Years back it appears that anything was posted, regardless of legality and filefronts rules.

Shortly after Joel took over we had a chat about older files that shouldn't have gone up in the first place. Our decision at the time was that we would enforce the existing rules, but due to the mammoth size of the task of going through every file on the site (and the fact removing files would make us hugely unpopular) we would leave any files unless directed to do so by the filefront management.

Seeing as the head chap has just left and been replaced I have fired off an email asking if he has any particular intentions towards dodgy files.

Yeah, we do try. :)

And yeah, your right on the 50 years thing, though as I understand if an orchestra plays a piece of music then the recording of that is covered by 50 years copyright as well. There are free music sites around though, so it is possible.
