But it makes sense to add textures with low resolutions to the low poly meshes!

Very true. Textures possibly have more effect in total than high poly models anyway. It doesn't take long to overload the texture buffer when your using large images, especially if you have a lot of nebulae using high quality textures onscreen.

Don't the stock models in the game do this? For example, the enterpise uses two or three lods if I remember correctly and the all use the same texture files do they not.

Well I already have 4 levels of texture detail set up. The reason I asked was that the stock models all use the same texture as the base but each mesh lod has own material seperate.
