Hey there. Just thought I'd mention a new mod a few friends of mine and I are working on. The tentative title is Star Trek Armada 2: Tactical Operations (the design screams for "Fleet Operations," but sadly, 'tis taken). The mod aims to streamline and enhance multiplayer play among a group of people, as opposed to instant action/AI--I play with a group of people on-campus, and we were getting bored with vanilla STA2.

Every ship in the game has either been replaced or revamped. So far the Federation side is just about complete. Many ships have been changed, in some cases in very non-canon ways--those I might replace with other ships if I can find 'em.

The ship classes in the game have changed drastically, because I'm sick and bloody tired of "rush to battleships and flood" games. A breakdown of ship types (which don't necessarily term them all correctly, I'm going for fun > canon) is below:

Cruiser - Encompasses scouts, destroyers, and cruisers. Cruisers, though the least durable of the ships in the game, have fairly powerful single-target attacks, often sporting multiple phaser banks and single-target torpedo launchers. They can seriously put a hurting on battleships. Frigate - Frigates have lots of low-power, multiple-target weapons (and I do mean a lot of them). They can easily dish out a lot of damage to fleets consisting of a lot of targets--meaning cruisers. Battleships - Big, extremely pricey, and slow, battleships shine most when taking out stations. All battleships have some sort of weapon that only affects stations, as well as getting most of the other really fun toys. They can generally shrug off frigate attacks, to a decent extent.

The tentative list of ships is as follows (some may change if I cannot get permission to use them):

Cruisers Rapier - An armed scout and light skirmish vessel; uses Epytron Omega's model. Sees cloak, has a speed booster special ability. Sabre - uses K7A's retexture. Tempest - uses ColdDarkParanoia's "HMS Tempast" model. Steamrunner - not canon at all as the artillery has been entirely removed and the spaceframe has been turned into a torpedo boat. Akira - uses Challenger's model. Defiant - A much more solid Defiant than in vanilla STA2, with weapons engendering a lot of Eric Cartman autoritah. Hard to get and pricey, too. Big pulse lasers, quantum torpedoes--these are the ones you send smashing to their deaths against battleships like the Sovereign. Uses Deemon's DefiantNX model.

Frigates Intrepid - another non-canon-but-fun change, the Intrepid has a number of quick-firing, low-damage phaser strips, as well as a MIRV torpedo launcher. Aegian - sports a quantum mini-torpedo launcher, as well as multi-target pulse lasers. Kelvin - uses the model by Pizza the Hutt. Telum - uses the model by theGreenBunny

Battleships Galaxy Sovereign Prometheus Poseidon - Model by ChiefBrex/Major Payne. Superships All races will be able to build "superships" that are obscenely expensive for their class and packed high with fun weapons and special weapons. The Federation's, though, are a cut above everyone else's; using their Temporal Research Station they pull future-Starfleet ships out of their own time periods, from the 25th and 26th centuries to the 29th (in blatant violation of the Temporal Prime Directive, naturally) to fight and aid the 24th-century Starfleet. Currently slated:

Eximus - a super-cruiser. Model by cleeve/APCMmkII. Excalibur II - a super-frigate. From Porty's Excalibur package; modeler unknown. Monarch - a super-battleship. Greathor's model. Ares - an EXTREMELY ANGRY super-battleship. Model by APCMmkII.

Other possibilities that I've been playing with are special Hero ships, also spawned by the Temporal Facility, using canon characters as commanders. They'd look identical to the regular ships, but be considerably more powerful (and, naturally, a dent to your wallet as big or bigger than the superships) and unable to be picked out of the crowd, so to speak. Not sure on that one yet, though it'd be fun (yeah, so there's one little Defiant there who's blowing the crap out of your fleet of Sovereigns, I see a problem!).

Planned races for sure are the Klingons and the Romulans; the Cardassians are likely as well, and I'll do the Borg if I have any idea on how to make them fit the new paradigm.

There will be a posting of some sort on the usual sites when I get something presentable. If anyone's interested in helping, I could use some wireframe work (some of the models don't have wireframes). Also, and very importantly, if there are any authors out there who would rather not have their models used, please PM me or give a shout here; I'll replace them quickly. Please don't bother warning me about modelers who want to be asked for permission before use; I can read a readme file and as I get closer to a release I'll get into contact with them. :) (I can texture passably, but I can't model worth anything...hence my reliance on others' models.)

Feedback's always welcome, of course.

Cheers, Ed

This sounds like what I am doing for Yesteryears, I wish you luck with this and hope you achieve what you are aiming for. :D

There are never too many mods coming out. ;) But I think what you mean is that there are too many of the same sort of mods coming out? - If so, I couldn't agree more.

Can't blame me for copying anyone else, heh...only mod I've ever downloaded is Borg Incursion 2, and after fiddling with it I kind of got distracted by shiny things and wandered off. (Interesting design, though.) I'll have to check out Yesteryears, if it's similar. Like I said, this mod is primarily being designed to play with a few friends of mine around my college. If other people like it--coolness.

Hello: I agree, this new mod sounds very promising, I myself trying to rebalance the game because I get sick everytime a cruiser battles a battleship and the latter ends unscratched, and to modify the AI accordingly. I wish you good luck Blacken and I look forward to see your work.
