Does anyone know how to open and edit the DRL/DSL files in the Missions folder?

I'm thinking that every file can be opened with some program. Otherwise they could not have re-created the single player missions.

They never recreated the missions from code as far as I know, they just moved things about in the Map Editor and changed paths for different objects. Might need clarification on that though.

Yeah, Ragnar's right. We just edited the .bzn files that were associated with the maps and re-wrote the AI files in /AI/AIPs.

if you talk about the single mission opening sequences - well, those are created new everytime with the ships and stations currently in the game - so e.g. if you change your enterprise to another model this will automaticly appear in the film sequences between the missions. the upgrade project by freyr changes the background and other stuff - that is why the sequences look so stunningly new...

Freyr, I was hoping you, or another modder who has changed the single player campaign might respond. I appreciate the info for the mission files. Could you tell me what you used to edit the AIPs? The issue I'm having is in Fed mission 3. The construction ship can't build the research station even though it's in the build list. Also, the Douglas never makes an appearance. The other issue I'm having is in mission 4, After the Enterprise arrives, the screen goes black and never reappears.

Any assistance or advice you may have would be greatly appreciated.

I used notepad for editing all of the AIP's. I'm afraid I can't definitively say what the problem with your files are without having seeing them, could you post the contents of that AIP?

Without seeing it, my guess would be a techtree issue, where your trying to build a unit without having the prerequisites.

As to the problem with the game dying, I would give up with that mission and start again from a stock mission. Make only a few changes at a time to objects that are placed in the mission, and keep a backup at all times. When the mission stops working once you have made a change, its a fair guess you can't do whatever you were doing that caused it to crash.

.drl and .dsl files are like .dll files : they seem to be opened by a C++ editor. You must have some C++ language knowledge. I cannot use that myself because it's too difficult for me. One good advice is to change map configuration as it was suggested before by Ragnar and Freyr.
