Ok after freyr turned me on to some ideas from work he was doing in the planets area, ive cobbled together a very early and working set of textures that will give the planets light and dark sides as if a sun or star were shining against them.heres a makeshift and not final version of earth type class m...
now im not releasing this when its done except to freyr for something he's working on making possible for armada II.i will leave it to his discretion when it's released...
so why bother everyone with it seeing as it's being released when completed by someone else at their discretion?
cause if the project for A2 comes thru that he's working on..it'll be worth the wait.and i want it to be the best it can be without feeling the need to rush it out.
but it will be released. :)
note:just to describe what your actually seeing..when the planet rotates the parts of the ground texture will move to the darker side of planet while the other side of the texture will emerge into the lighter side.now this glow view you are seeing is not right where i want it to be as for light vs. dark..but its getting close...also the method im using has an unintended but nice effect..notice it made the ocean ripples glow..although they look like massive tidal waves right now lol...need to shrink them down some..

And the best bit? Once Curtis's work is done and it joins up with mine then the planets will have a set of lightmaps for the cities as well, so you will be able to see the cities illuminated on the dark side of the planet.

Sounds like an awesome idea, I look forward to seeing it...hey I've played that map before...i got my butt stomped by the klingons, what map is that?
stock map called planets.
update on the planet glow stuff..im having major troubles with the model and the texture set..im gonna try milkshape to change the model.i *think* if the file size stays exactly the same size byte wise, the model will still function with multiplayer and online without other players needing the same model.im off work tonight and tommorow so i have some time to play with it.

Hello: I agree, I really like the idea, I was planing to redo the glows of the cities myself, but I guess I could wait to see your work Curtis. I look forward to it.
well some good and bad news, bad news first.
i have attempted everything to add light/dark sides to the planet model without much success.
what i have got half way looking right i will send to freyr and he can either put out a small m class texture set,or whatever.
what i do have working involves editing the cloud layer to be the light dark side layer, simulates the planet rotating around a sun with the light reflecting off the planet, thus creating light on one side and dark on the other.
this does not change the texture to be dark on one side light on the other.i could have made a set that would have but it would have rotated correctly with the cloud layer as the planet rotaion is slower than the cloud layer..
oh well A for effort i guess.
although it is a nice earth like m class texture set at hi res 512 x 512
i'll send it to freyr tommorow.
ive sent freyr a nice hi res set of finalized textures after resolving the problems i had encountered.i just submitted a small fix for all the planets with light dark side textures.and also updated federation base textures which blend seamlessly with the shipyards as well.ill post a few small screens later tonight.
everyone who hasnt noticed 1.3.0 of the a2 upgrade is out..so dont HOG the bandwidth tonight and save a brutha a download spot :) heh..
