Being relatively new to the A2 modding scene, I have a question: Is it possible to have hero units with a single-ship build limit in A2?

There isnt a way around it using the standard building of ships (ie techtree, yard etc), but you could make so that when you click a button on a yard (ie as a special weapon) the yard will "split" into a hero unit and yard (using the galaxy class seperation weapon) Iam using this my in mod "The Warp Project". This way will allow you to only have one ship in game cos the new yard will not have the special button on it ......

You can make sure the AI only builds one. But I know that's not you meant. That's a great idea Paul. :) Really Brilliant thinking.

Or just set a starting amount of 1 biomatter on your race, and give the hero unit a biomatter cost. Change the name from biomatter to heroes, so you get a message saying insufficant heroes instead of not enough biomatter.

That and latinum if your not using it.

Not a bad idea! You could start off with a set limit of biomatter either equivalent to that faction's number of heroes (so you can build one of each), or slightly less, making you have to choose. The only porblem I forsee is that someone can just use those points to keep building more than one of a specific hero, or set resource limits on Infinite, both of which kinda destroy the purpose... Still, it's a nice stopgap until something that more meets the needs comes along... [Sonic]uk has a good idea too, though I would've liked heroes to cost resources and build time. Though it does solve the build limit issue... I was thinking of somehow allowing a station to "research" a hero ship, only instead of creating an attached research pod of some sort, it generates a ship. That would sort of be the best of both worlds, because you'd have to pay through the nose for one, yet you could still only have one of each at a time. I'm not sure if that would be feasible, though...

Only problem I see with that is what if someone Builds more than one of the Base that you use to "Build" the Hero Ship, than you can get two, same with building Two Level one Tech centers, and paying for the Upgrade twice.

Well using the patch project it'd be possible to set it so that the ship has a build limit of one by using the MaxBuildableNumber command. In stock A2 though, I think that the best way would be Freyr's idea. Sonic's involves the patch project as well (seperation is hardcoded without it) so just putting in that line in the .odf will probably be easier Seems like you'll need to be dependant on the patch I'm afraid :)

Here is an idea for a hero ship. Some one should do a Reliant with Kahn's Voice. It would be awesome when you select the Reliant to hear Kahn say "Revenge is a dish best served cold."
