A while back I had a little bit of a train journey into and back from work. To try and avoid dying from boredom on the journey one of the things I started doing was scribbling down names that sounded warshippy. After doing it for a couple of weeks I moved onto doing other random stuff.

I'm a little old fashioned in my taste for warship names. I like the good old fashioned way of naming warships, the sort that sound good/intimidating from the time you hear the name. After all, If you were a dictator or pirate outfit and you heard that a squadron of real warships were coming for a visit, would you be more worried about a squadron comprised of three ships called Dandelion, Daisy and Dwarf or Devastator, Dominator and Despoiler?

That having been said, if I came up with horrible names then I did include them because I guess the federation would prefer Dandelion, Daisy and Dwarf where as the Klingons wouldn't be caught dead in a ship with such a name.

Anyway, i've got no use for them, so I thought i'd type them up and post them because I guess that someone might be interested in some decent names for ships in a mod or a name for a new model either now at some future point.

So, without further ado, a couple of names.

A good topic of choice, I'll grant you that. :) I've gone through a similar process for Zero Hour. I wanted to use names that actually felt unique to the specific ships, an example being I put scientific names for the ships (like the Nebula) that would take on the science roles, and Greek god names etc, to the warships. There are some names you've got though, that I don't think would suit a Starship. The USS Bow for example, or USS Annihilation (althought USS Annihilator works just fine). One thing I have done with Zero Hour though, is to add foreign names. I'm sure the French and German are members of Starfleet, I think it would be safe to say that they'd also christen some starships with foreign names, instead of just English. ;) PS: USS Drawf? I think the starship commander would feel a little humiliated. =p

Well, it depends who's it is. I can see the Klingons happily calling their ships nice aggressive names. =p

There are some awful names in there, but most of them are separated out underneath the others. Still, I thought i'd include them just in case someone found a use for them. I'm waiting to see a class of warships named after the first half of the I's, those are quite good.

By the way, there have been at least five HMS Dwarf's over the centuries. If you want to see some truly awful names, look up the names of napoleonic era British ships of war. (at the time, we had over six hundred rated warships, and godness only knows how many supporting ships)

Aerilon;4932584PS: USS Dwarf? I think the starship commander would feel a little humiliated. =p[/QUOTE]

I dunno, dwarves are portrayed in the J.R.R. Tolkein Lord of the Rings novels as doughty, tough fighters who are steadfast and loyal to their friends beyond reason. Just the kind of people I'd like backing me up when I get serious about going after the Borg Queen. ;)

For something a little more current. During WWII, the Royal Navy had an entire class of escort ship which was known as the Flower-class corvette. A fellow named Nicholas Montserrat wrote a novel called The Cruel Sea about serving aboard one of these ships. It is one of my favorite books and an excellent read. The ship in the novel was named HMS Compass Rose. I do not know if the Royal Navy actually had a ship with this name or not. There are also a pair of ships named Pergola and Sorrel featured in the novel. Near the beginning, the Captain makes a remark about the odd name of the ship along the lines of, "Well, I suppose by the time they move down the list to Pansy, Stinkwort, and Love-in-the-Mist, no one will look twice at us."

HMS Compass Rose is a fictional ship. Take a look at this though:-

The Nightstar Zoo • View topic - British Navy ship names. Its funny, but as he says some of those names are pretty awful.

Yeah I've been pretty exhaustive in searches usable names for ships for years even before A2... because I loved FanFic writing and engaged in alot of it with friends from 5th grade on (thankfully our efforts got alot better than when we were in 5th grade) to keep from using the same names over and over i developed massive shiplists, I have... I BELIEVE the most comprehensive listing of Imperial vessel names and associated classes ever assembled. I'm also an avid naval strategy bugg so I have massive lists of the ships fielded and even proposed for just about every major navy to sail the oceans since 1860-on. I've used many of those real-life ship lists to give more appropriate names for support vessels. Especially since in my mod you use (and lose) ALOT more cargo ships and freighters than in a normal game I have rather large name blocks that use alot of vessels from WW1 and WW2. I'm actualling working in my spare time to make the list more user friendly for the couple of folks helping me with my mod but if anyone is interested I'd be more than happy to share my indexes after I finish straightening them out a bit more.

Yes please, lets give people a huge variety of names to chose from. I'd very much like to see them if nothing else, and it would give people more of a variety to chose from.

I'll put some of the mod work aside and try to rush work on the index then.
