thunderfoot006;4932789I dunno, dwarves are portrayed in the J.R.R. Tolkein Lord of the Rings novels as doughty, tough fighters who are steadfast and loyal to their friends beyond reason.
the Starfleet Kid;4932911Depends on the dwarf.... "Certainty of death. Small chance of success. ....what are we waiting for?"

Seems I stand corrected. =p

Since war and defense are the secondary mission of Starfleet, the primary being peaceful exploration, I don't see them using aggressive names like "Dominator" or "Remorseless". Their more militaristic ships tend to have names that show fearlessness rather than aggression. Names like "Defiant" and "Dauntless" and "Invincible" are more along Fed lines.

Come to think of it, "USS Fearless" is a pretty cool name.

Well only in TNG did they become the peace loving power that they are known as. In TOS and TMP they were more aggressive and really had more class, how do you think they and the Klingon Empire stayed on a level playing field with neither having the upeer hand for over 100 years?.

They did use names (at least in fandom) that were more aggressive. Look at the Federation class Dreadnaught that was actually seen on monitors I believe in STTMP many of that class had aggressive names. So it's not out of the realm of possibility. ;)

I think they were plenty peace-loving in TOS/TMP eras. They fought a major conflict with the Klingons and Romulans in the late 23rd century (according to the Star Fleet Universe) but all you have to do to see their philosophy is look at their flagship: the U.S.S. Enterprise, always a class of ship described as an "explorer", with the parameters of its mission being exploring new planets, making contact with new species, and expanding the range of human experience. The Klingons and Romulans are never seen to share that spirit of exploration, and the Federation (outside of possibly Section 31 and Worf in a few episodes) is never seen to share their lust for conspiracy and warfare.

While their primary mission was exploration they did have more teeth than they did in TNG. Actually they (ships) were never referred to as explorers. The Enterprise was a Heavy Cruiser. Also they usually went to their phasers first before diplomacy as seen many times throughout TOS.

This is a nice idea for a thread - I have been thinking on some names, with a little humour to them (as fits into the Halo universe); UNSC MAC Daddy UNSC Thunderfoot's Revenge UNSC Say My Name UNSC You Got Owned These will probably be UNSC destroyers... This is fun!

Yeah those are fun, I used to hang out with some of my uncle's friends who were err "Private Military Contractors" who had most of their gear stored in the Phillipinnes because the US State Department frowns on US citizens having heavy military gear. And they had some artillery pieces they showed me pictures of that had some names slapped on them that I won't repeat in polite company. I use alot of indexes of WW1 and WW2 ships. And try to group a theme of names for a class. My Federation Police Force ships are named after fallen officers. I got the idea when a local officer I knew was killed recently in the line of duty and named an entire class of Police Cutter after him. Freighters I generally name after tramp steamers and light freighters from WW1/WW2 Cargo ships i name after converted liners and the more advanced and swift cargo vessels from WW2. Minelayers I typically name after birds. Dreadnaughts are named after Virtues and Ideals. Battleships are named for important places or after famous ships of history. Cruisers are named after battles or cities. etc. etc. I also poured through every Bantam Spectra Star Wars book ever made (I own them all, which is unfortunately why I can't afford my wedding yet much to my fiancee's anger, oh the agony of being a Star Wars freak) and I'm working on the Del Rey ones and I have a friendwho owns all the comics to compile a massive list of every vessel mentioned in Star Wars and to identify those that were not mentioned and assign classes to them. My current Imperial shiplist has 8,224 vessels on it and growing. the Rebel list is lagging a bit behind. A tip for those looking for a few good names quick try HazeGrey it's a WW2 ship site and you can get alot of good names there real quick Or try the Naval Vessel Registry.
