For those of you whom are looking for some good ship names, K_merse put out a very comprehensive listing awhiles back for Starfleet which can be found here. He also put out an equally excellent listing of Romulan ship names as well. Those can be found here. One of the things I like most about the Starfleet listing he did is the inclusion of the registry number for the name where it was known. I cannot imagine my personal install without either of these. Yeah, it's eyecandy. But it is excellent eyecandy. Done by someone who cares deeply about Star Trek and is diligent and talented enough to ensure it is all correct.

Yeah I have a batch of human colony ships early on in my game that are the Manifest Destiny class (the history buffs will get a chuckle out of that) so they have some fun semi-human over the top pride names before they start being named after cities. I add the registry numbers wherever I can and then try to make ones up that seem logical where I don't have numbers. I have to agree they really do add to the game.

Oh, man.... you Yanks and your ship names.... that's the nice thing about the British tradition-- the only ships named after places are those places the enemy came to die, like Aboukir, Culloden and Trafalgar....

Personally, I like Vimy Ridge, Ortona and Juno m'self....

Hmmmm, looks like a wall of names to choose from. The ones listed should fill the ranks of most of my fed units. Although I have found a liking for naming several ships in honor of several ancient and contemporary historical figures.

Well, sort of. There have been exceptions, such as the town class of destroyers. Faced with producing a hundred names for destroyers overnight they resorted to an atlas. =p

Well like ammunition ships are often named after volcanoes... a cutesy idea by someone with a sense of humor in the Navy Department since it's true if they go up they'll explode like their namesakes...

Freyr's list which started this thread is a pretty good one. There are some excellent names there which I have already taken advantage of. His list also lead me to do some digging into naming conventions for navies the world over. Up until the Los Angeles class SSNs, US Navy attack submarines were named for species of fish. This lead to some really good names(Tang, Trigger, Wahoo) as well as some pretty odd ones(Squalus, Puffer, Dogfish).

But in all this discussion of names for Star Trek ships, how come no one has suggested something like:

- USS James T. Kirk? -

Of course this would be a God Ship, with lots of weapons. Female commanders of enemy ships would find this ship devilishly attactive and be unable to tear their eyes from it once they achieved a sensor lock on. It would have to have a new type of special weapon. This will be called the.....Irregular...PausePhaser. This fires with a randomly timed pause of varying delay during combat. It also never misses and does devastating amounts of damage with each hit. And at least once during each battle, this ship simply must have its hull plating torn away or ripped open. To expose its manly EPS conduits.

Kidding is over now. We've not mentioned Klingon or Romulan ship names here. This seems a bit unfair to me. Here is the list of names I use for my Klingon TOS D-7 battlecruiser. Some of them are familiar but most of them came from a book I have about how to speak Klingon.

And here is the list I use for my Romulan Hawk-class heavy cruiser. I was working up some mods and maps for Dawn of War at the time so they have a bit of a 41st Millenium flavor to them. But this fits in nicely with the Romulans anyway.

Because it would be a horrible name? =p Its actually a serious point through, because you'd have to think of the sort of names the federation would give its warships.

Um, I think the federation is a bit to liberal though so they'd reject names that might upset or intimidate people so the name of someone with a reputation for being politically incorrect would defiantly be out. How about the Salient Debate or the Continuation of Politics? (with apologies to Andromeda).

By the way, am I the only person that has difficulty saying Indefatigable!? I defy anybody to say it three times in a row quickly. I'm surprised that they ever called a ship that simply because seemingly nobody can pronounce it.
