You'd hit a special weapon icon, and another ship (or two) which have already been coded in would 'appear' as targets to the enemy until special energy ran out?

I don't think you can do that in stock . I wouldn't even know where to begin coding that. Closest thing that comes to mind is the Romulan holo projector.

With replaceweapon, it would be easy :) But IIRC there is some string which tells to the game if it's a manual targeting special weapon. Try to delete it and we'll see what happens then.
