I'm looking to recruit people interested in helping out with the Upgrade Project.

I'm assuming most people will know about the aims of the the Upgrade Project. The charter of the Project is long and complex. It aims to um, upgrade A2. (that's it)

Basically, as long as it makes things "better" by my own definition of the word then it's fair game. I don't plan to make the game play any differently, however thanks to our affiliate projects we are able to offer anybody interested a complete mod showcasing every significant graphical advancement the community has made that they can easily add their own mods to. It's also absorbed other improvements such as a the Physics Project and a suitably graphically advanced version of the Improved Single Player Campaign.

That is what we do. We do not alter the balance of the game other than creating slightly less harmless AI's to enhance the gaming experiance of the player.

I've a couple of things planned for the next release.

  • Implementing recent advantages being made by the Lighting Project.
  • Finishing the maps and AI for the Klingon Campaign
  • Replacing all stock models with higher quality replacements.
  • Replacing all of the admirals log artwork with more flattering screenshots of the new models.
  • Upgrading every single stock skirmish to modern standards with the new Midnight map objects such as asteroid fields and higher quality ambient lighting.

There are three basic areas of work there.

Map editing. This is essentially a dead art in modding which doesn't require any skills beyond using the map editor. Basically, new map lighting needs setting (both ambient lighting and adding new omni-directional lights) and new good looking map objects (ie, asteroid fields) need adding to every single stock skirmish map. Also, some campaign missions need doing.

Adding models. This one is nice and easy, basically after identifying replacements for the stock models they need integrating. Then we need a new (flattering!) screenshot of the model.

Testers. Basically, after writing an AI it needs playing repeatedly to find any bugs it has with it. The process of working on AI's is considerably faster if other people are available to test it.

As you can see, anybody has skills that can be used to help. You don't need to know about everything to help or, have even been a member of a team before. If you don't have any modding experience, this is a good place to start. If your interested in helping, just say the word.

Saying "hey, I'm modding my game, too!" in a forum full of modders is like yelling, "hey, I like Star Trek!" in a crowded theatre showing the new film. We all know why you're here. Freyr is looking for people who are specifically willing to make an upgraded version of the game that can be used as a basis for less capable modders to play the original game.

Count me in, Freyr. I think it'd be a good idea to make this completely compatible with the demo, as well.

Marvellous, thanks for the offer. Do you have any preference as to which race you'd like to have a go at?

As you say, it's just finding some new models of the same design to the old ones, then installing them. (which aren't a billion pollies, the game has to run afterwards. =p) It's not hard, and something most modders have done to their own installations however there are a lot of people that either don't know how to do all of this (or simply don't have the time or inclination to replace a hundred odd models!)

All we're doing is making things available to everybody so they can enjoy them.

Just pick a race

thunderfoot006;4971392Freyr, I've said it before but please feel free to include anything I've done any way you need to to make this happen.

Thanks. Would you do me a favour and add my work on the campaign (Midnightified maps & AI) to the Improved Campaign? They ought to be released seperately, and it's only fair considering that I did use some of the Improved Single Player Campaign stuff (like the revised breifing/objectives text).

The demo does have some restrictions, but we can certainly upgrade the Demo to the maximum possible extent.

Welcome to the team. :) I guess your more interested in swapping models out? If so, which race are you looking at doing?

I am waiting for Dan to join any minute - he just HAS to do the cardie stuff - that will be the easiest of all races. they are as true to the original models as possible even if I prefer some of achilles work.

and for the roms we should take all of aads ships, same for the klings as he is revamping them as well

borg small ships, 8472 - those will be a challenge. does chiletrek have anything to offer?

count me in for only half funny remarks, bad english, a name for the baby and beta testing. even your wicked AIs.

Oh, guess.

Seriously, I'd be only too happy to do the Roms, Feds or Klinks --I figure with some of the stuff we have available, most of it stock replacement, it's as simple as asking nicely. I'd recommend asking Major A Payne for permission for Borg Incursion models since there's lots of good stuff in there.

Same as SFK im good with the roms, klinks, and feds...but as of late im leaning towards the Roms a lil more...just need to make all the textures around the same color. I'll help with the Ai and odfs as well. No doubt Kid willl take the Feds though :p Though with the cardies done by Dan (as well as it seems some romulans, g2 see if he's willing to help out lol) the Feds done by Starbase 34 this isnt gonna be too hard, im just worried about what gonna happen to 8472 they don't seem like they easy to model. Well lets get crackin :nodding:
