will having odf files that are not used ingame or entered in the techtree file but are still in the relevant folders cause the game to crash when the launch screen is finished.?

No. I've got about a million .odfs lying around that are unused (the result of my efforts to combine my game with the TCs lying around), and it still works just fine. As long as they are not referenced ANYWHERE in the game, you're fine.

depends on the error, if it's a ship and the weapons are bugged it will crash only when the ship is either built or fires... if any odf has a missing quotation mark you are having trouble..

My suggestion is to keep your odf folder as clear as you can.

so i got rid of everything not used, still crashes, whats strange is that it worked fine on my xp pc but this crash happens on my vista laptop, just to note that my pc is a pentium 4 3.2,1gb of ram , a 7200 rpm hd and a 128 mb graphics card and the laptop is a dual core 1.8,2gb of ram a 5200 hd and a 256 mb graphics card but the pc runs the game faster now thats weird . To sove the problem of the crash i copied the working armada folder to the laptop and it worked fine i then added the all the old odfs and the new race etc and low and behold it crashed so i re copied the game folder added the new race only and it works.aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh i hate machines. The point is that triple checking isnt enough somewhere there was a typo and after hours of checking i found numerous errors and still there must have been more. so boring as it is backing up files that you know are correct is essential, as i am sure everyone is aware of. check recheck ,check again and check once more. what would be handy is if some kind of spell checker tool could be made for ms word so typos would be a thing of the past.

I had to read that several times before I decided that yes, you did just post that. Did you mean MS Notepad? Or a spell checker specifically for Armada .odf files? Theoretically that would be possible, you'd just have to add it as a language - very useful it might prove too.

I wasn't actually going to say anything, however I would just make the observation that spell checkers don't do anything about grammar! (or checking for programming errors)

I think that whomever was responsible for "txt spk" and the resulting decimation of spelling and grammar should die a slow and horrible death.

Anyway, if your after a tool that can check programming syntax then look at Crimson Editor, IIRC telling it your coding in C++ does the job for ODF files.

lol now we're talking about modding notepad. How do you add a language? I'm sure there is no ODF thing that can do that..... is there?
