Ok, so I just installed the new running lights from FahRes, following all the instructions, and for some reason the game now won't load. If i try to start a saved game, the loading screen comes up, the little blue bar freezes at about 5mm long. If i try to start a new game, the screen just goes black, and the only way to get out is to stop the application using task manager. I've gone through the instructions in reverse to try to resolve the problem, but it still exists. This serves me right for getting cocky and not backing up the whole game first (though i did back up the lights.spr file as recommended. even substituting it back in doesnt fix the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Never mind. Problem isnt with the running lights, its with new fed ships. Not sure why it affected save games that didnt involve the fed though....

It's because of the changes to the sprite files, probably. Sprites and techtrees being changed means that the save games are now useless. Glad you resolved the problem, though.

Me too. I'd hate to have to start rebuilding the game again lol. But the save games all work fine, and so do the running lights it seems. Looks like the problem lies with one of the fed ships, so I have to go through them individually to find out which caused the problem. Still, its better than the alternative. Now if I just remember to back it up

Not quite. Messing with sprites won't invalidate your saved games because the game is "tricked" into thinking that the sprites are the same as they were originally. Changing the tech trees will invalidate your games though.

Yeah, not quite. It'll still crash if you delete a sprite. Which was my point.

I think it depends on the kind of sprite. Weapons, yes. Lights, probably not.

Interesting... i'd changed both tech trees and sprite files and it hadnt invalidated the save games, which is why i was able to load them after resolving the issue. Strange. Now if i can just figure out which ship is causing the issue...

Well, I found that it was the techtree causing the issue somehow. The 2 ships that were at the root of the problem work now. To really confuse things, all i did to fix it was delete the techtree entries, and then paste them back in. this miraculously fixed it. WTH is going on there???? Oh, if someone could change the title to "really weird problem", i'd appreciate it. seems wrong to retain the current title when it was just coincidence the problem occured after installing the running lights

The techtree files are a little backwards from the other files. They work on the exclusion principle. Unless an object is specifically mentioned and given a rating, the game will attempt to use it. They are also some of the pickiest when it comes to spelling and spacing of filename entries. As to why what happened, happened, and your fix for it, the exe file has a lot of odd stuff within it because the game engine for Armada and Armada 2 was originally intended to be used in a land combat RTS which was never released. As a result of this, A2 has some fascinating quirks which can frustate and puzzle the Hell out of someone once in awhile.
