That's... helpful.
I'm no expert on this particular subject, but to the best of my knowledge it would have to be added in on the model. I'm fairly sure you attach the sprite you want to the crew damage node to get the smoke venting.
I'm fairly sure the BBOM (its on A2files) covers how to do this sort of thing. Of course, I could be completely barking up the wrong tree and misinterpreting what other people have said over the years.
I'm sure someone that knows will pop in and tell us sooner or later.

Sorry, I was in a hurry to post and sometimes when I post about issues, even I overlook that maybe someone has already done it and released it in a mod.

Buy 'em a pack of cigarettes and offer 'em a light....
Anyway, Freyr has the right idea. Emitters have to be put onto the model.
i have 2 computers and the big book of modding wont open on them...... never has...... idk.... i tryd to add the smoke to the ship but it ended up all misshaped....
The BBOM is available in two different formats: 1) Microsoft Word and 2) PDF format...surely one of those should work. If you are using Milkshape the following link will give you details on how to add the emitters. THey are pretty straight forward. Armada 2 Files - Milkshape 3D Tutorial
To add emitters to a ship, first decide: Which system should activate them? Basically, when a given system is destroyed, should the whole thing start sparking and hissing and whatnot? Then, you need to place the emitter on your model, using the damage sub-parent node of your chosen system (if you don't know what I just said, please read Major A. Payne's hardpointing tutorial). Then, you need to rotate it so it actually comes out of the ship. This is most easily accomplished using FahreS' method (found here). Then export and you're ready to go! To view your damage addition in Storm3D, load up the SOD and press F6 on your keyboard. Note that this will toggle ALL damage effects, including 3D sections, sprites, and emitters.
And, voila, you're ready to go!
