Tip: Download a full race mod and extract it in a new folder. Then you can see which files you need to modify if you want to make a whole new race. That's why it so complex that someone could make a tutorial about it, not a post in a forum.

Okay then a quick help: 1. Extract the new race files in a new directory. 2. Copy all of the station, weapon and ship ODFs in the proper directory. Just like SODs, textures, sounds, AdmiralsLog pics, AIPs, and gui_RACENAME.spr, gui_RACENAME.cfg, RACENAME.odf and (if you want to work with mapeditor) the mapeditor odfs 3. From this time it's easier if you have a brand new A2 installation or you know, that only you edited the files.

Because you have to open all of the files in the A2 directory which are remained in the new directory. You have to insert the race tectree in the fulltech.tt and tech1.tt. You have to insert wireframes and buildbuttons in gui_global.spr (they are in two groups). You have to insert the new weapons in the weapon.spr. You have to insert the sound orders to events.dat. Tip: Open the original and the new file and after every 10-20 rows check them. If you found a mismatch, you possibly found the rows you have to insert 4. Look at the new folder, which files remained. It's possible that there are ART_CFG.h, RTS_CFG.h and splash.jpg are still there. Just overwrite the original files with these ones.

I hope I didn't miss anything and this will help you.

The best advice I can give you, because this is how I learned, is to download Westworlds Big book of Modding off of armada2.filefront.com. Basically you modify the races.odf file in the odf/other folder, and create an odf file for the race you want to create using an existing race as a template. For example I created a new race recently, named the Terran Empire, so first thing I did was to make the terran.odf file, then I went to the races.odf file in the odf/other folder, and added the line terran.odf right above the norace.odf line. Of course you will have to change both the number in order and the number of races number on the races.odf file.
