hello all! well i am a complete noob when it comes to modding, i have never even tried to do it, but i love playing with ppls mods ;) u lot do great work
anyway, i have been trying to add on complete new races, but when i load a second add on race, it cancels out the first one, so i can only have 1 new race at a time
is there anyway i can have more than 1 new race? thanks very much
A quick guide for the complete noob. In your Armada 2 install directory, usually C:\Program Files\Activition\Star Trek Armada II, there is a folder called ODF, and in there is Other. In this folder, open a file called races.odf in notepad or wordpad, and using the name of the race you want to add, add it to the bottom of the list, increasing the total race number and something else. Soz I'm doing this from memory because I've yet to install Armada 2 on my new PC. Hope this helps
Hey thanks for the reply :)
well i have the dominion race, i just tried to add the atheros raceand put there name at the bottom of the list but it still took the dominion race out of the game :(
the race i tried to add came with an installation program, do i have to add the race file by file and then change the "races.odf" file?
also when i transer files, it askes whether i want to replace the files with the same name, do i do this?
sorry about all the questions lol just trying to learn :)
To install two seperate mods like this, install them to another folder and u have to manually add them in so as not to erase another mods data by say, copying over files. It might sound time consuming but once you start its quite easy, and the BBOM, or Westworlds Big Book of Modding is a godsend for this.
thanks very much :D
when im adding the files and a file already exists with the same name, do i replace it or change the name?
If you replace it, only the new file will be in the game. If you change the name, A2 won't recognize it. I'm sorry to say, but what you're trying to do will be fraught with problems until you learn how to mod A2. Get the BBOM here: http://armada2.filefront.com/file/Westworlds_Big_Book_Of_Modding;8835 It's a huge volume of guides to all the basics of moding A2.
The rest is easy, just the one that gets most people when they want to mod something is having to edit the AIP and techtree files. That is time consuming and confusing if you don't know how. Also if the mods have custom effects such as sprites etc, you'd have to edit them completely too. It CAN done, but it would be time-consuming. You'd more than likely have to make note of any text based file the 2 mods overwrite and do them manually. Though BBOM is quite good helpful too.
ok thanks very much.....i guess now is a good as time as ever to practice modding :) ill give the big book a read and see what i can do :)
Hello: There is a file named races.odf in the odf\other folder, in there you can edit to add more than one addon race, so here is mine at the moment: numberOfRaces = 10 race0 = "borg.odf" race1 = "fed.odf" race2 = "kling.odf" race3 = "rom.odf" race4 = "card.odf" race5 = "fer.odf" race6 = "species8472.odf" race7 = "dominion.odf" race8 = "alien.odf" // this one is 'uninhabited' for planets race9 = "norace.odf" Be careful to keep the order and to change the total number of races at the beginning. The norace is essential for the game because they are for non-playable spatial units like planets and nebulaes. I hoipe this can help too :) .
