Select Multiplayer from the main menu, then select GAMESPY from the list. It'll ask you to enter your account details; there is a create account button somewhere. Fill out the info, and it'll let you log on.

At that point, you'll have to find someone to play which may be easier said than done these days.

Why? A2 supports direct IP connections as well as having gamespy. You need that for A1, but not for A2.

Because A2 is now an old game, and lots of people have moved on to newer games.

Why is it the best option for multi? As so far as I know (and I say this as someone that's played online on and off since 2003) it's not used or needed for A2.

A1 is a different matter because the server is down, but A2's server is still up and working as well as it was the day the game was released.

It's because it is a far better client (no need for annoying firewall checking and also all the random drops) and because that's where the players have been congregating. Most people have abandoned Gamespy in the last year due to these. The Tunngle A2 room gets a few players per day for instance (at least when I check it, there are always between 1-2 players in there). Similarly the FO room gets between 10-30 players at any given point.

Having played literally tens of thousands of games online in Armada II I can definitively state that if your having problems with dropping, it's due to your internet connection. Armada has never had a problem with people randomly dropping. The only issue that we have ever had with gamespy is being annoyed by adverts if your using the GSA browser app instead of the ingame browser.

Also, the "annoying firewall checking" is being bypassed by punching a VPN past your firewall to everybody on that network. In other words, it's bypassing your firewall totally. That means that if like most people your mostly relying on it for safety and security, your likely to run into a rude surprise one day. Worse, it's not even a VPN specific to A2!

Anybody can join that channel and then connect directly to your computer as if they were sitting on your LAN. They don't even need Armada to do it. This raises security issues that are as obvious as they are serious for your computer, and anything connected to your network.

Frankly, I wouldn't touch an open VPN client of that sort with a barge pole.
