Earlier on today I removed my entire Zero Hour install, as I couldn't get it to load into the map editor (where I do my testing). All it did was to crash straight back to the desktop, so I figured I'd erase it, and then start again from the backup that I have.

So, I started putting in complete ships and stations into a new install, hit the zero-hour map editor, and it went straight there first time. I took three shots, before I quit out to add another ship.

I then (once had added that other ship) hit the map editor icon, only for the install to crash straight away. I tried again, with no success, so looked over the files for the ship I'd just input, to find everything as it should be.

I then decided to remove said ship, and take some more pictures of what I had. This didn't work either, as again, it wouldn't load straight off. At the moment, say I attempt to load the map editor ten times, it'll work once. Then it'll crash another nine times, then it'll work again - all of this with no changes being made to the actual install, it just sometimes works, and other times doesn't.

What the hell is going on? :uhm:

Hmm... What exactly have you added to the install? Just ships or anything else - explosion sprites or anything that is chosen randomly (starfield's are like that I think) could cause a crash when a 'broken' one is loaded. Apart from that, I'm not sure - have you tried a complete stock install and seeing if that crashes? If it doesn't then I'd use it as a base to start adding stuff in. The randomness of it has me stumped; the only other thing I can suggest is to find a common denominator between all of the attempts.

Three things jump to mind:

- you've got a spelling error in a techtree entry that only affects certain races, - your map editor is loading a GUI that doesn't work properly, - you've got an error in a race .ODF (such as odf/other/fed.odf) which is loaded along with the GUI.

If it doesn't then I'd use it as a base to start adding stuff in.
I have a stock install already on here, and that works without problem. Thats where I copied the files over to the ZH install.
- you've got a spelling error in a techtree entry that only affects certain races
It wouldn't be the tech files as I haven't put them into the new install yet; you don't need tech files to simply load ships into the map editor.
- your map editor is loading a GUI that doesn't work properly - you've got an error in a race .ODF (such as odf/other/fed.odf) which is loaded along with the GUI.

This might be GUI related (seeing as the stock game loads one of six randomly each time). I have made some changes to mine (though mostly, renames for later). Swear they've worked in the past though, I'll have to go over them.

PS: In regards to GUI's, is there anywhere that allows you to select which ones are available in the random choice?

Not that I know of. If they're still tied to the races you could try loading them up one by one in Instant Action. If one crashes then I think you've found your culprit.

I can't do that yet for the simple reason that my tech tree's are a mess. If I tried to load up instant action, the computer would go to build something that would crash the game straight away. I'll have to doss through the sprite and .odf files.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like the ideal testing environment :( What you could do (boring and time-consuming thought it is) is to attack map editor with a notepad and pen, making notes of all the guis that come up over say twenty times. If one of them doesn't - and you've had a crash - then I think it would be safe to assume that's the one. Sorry I can't be of much help; but I hope you get it sorted. On the plus side -at least you know your ships and everything work. ;)

Well, it was the GUI's, or rather, the text supporting them. As a quick test, I put the stock GUI files on top of the ZH ones to see if it would work, and it did...

Don't understand that though. The only changes made are those of the name. In the .odf/other/ folder, I select my klingon species, and where it has:// Name of the interface configuration and sprite files. interfaceConfiguration = "gui_kli.cfg" interfaceSprites = "gui_kli.spr"I simply changed it to:// Name of the interface configuration and sprite files. interfaceConfiguration = "gui_klingon.cfg" interfaceSprites = "gui_klingon.spr"I changed the .spr files for my four races too, along with the names of the files in the /misc folder. The only bit I'm unsure about is where we've got:interfaceConfiguration = "gui_x.cfg"Where does this actually link too?

The 'misc' directory is where the .cfg files are located.

That file has to do with GUI layout.
