I've got a question. What are the rules about including copyrighted sound files in a mod? I mean, you can use voice clips from shows/movies found on the internet or taken from a disc, right? But what about say, adding AC/DC songs to a mod... wouldn't that be illegal redistribution? Is so, then how come I've seen certain music included in some mods? Can anyone clear this up?

Kel. Its actually illegal to include ANY sounds, or music which are not officially authorised by the original creator. I would suggest either attempting to obtain permission if your planning on releasing anything (but don't hold your breath), or just keep it for a personal mod. Mind you. In saying that there are certain artists who have made downloads of their music perfectly legal. You'll need to find out which though.

Thanks Major, But are you saying that (without permission) I can't even use voice clips from ST episodes for my mod? I mean, is this a 'technical' issue that really doesn't matter for freely distributed mods, or are we in danger from using what we share? I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Thank you.

If you make a mod you might include a link in your ReadMe file to the sight where the sound files is so people could download it themselves and you're not liable. Just tell them where to insert the sound files.

Wait a minute. I'm really starting to get discouraged from all these permissions issues. I appreciate the good advice I'm getting and I understand that ppl are just trying to help... But when I decided to put together and release my work, I figured I'd go by the examples I'd learned from. Let me be specific: 1) I've seen mods with movie/episode sounds included. 2) I've seen mods with entire musical scores released. 3) I've also seen other elements (non sound) modified from their original forms for use in mods. I'm fairly certain none of these were used with permission from the original companies. Each time I think I'm ready to release my work, I discover a new issue with regard to permissions. So what's the real deal? Am I destined to be thwarted from EVER getting my stuff out? Please clarify... I just want to share what I've done. :(
