Whoa. Where to start. Well my name is Terry, and I just started to mod BC though I have a lot of experience in modding games such as Freelancer, Trackmania, Unreal Tournament (All of them :D), etc. During the last month while I was trying to beat the game and installing mods, I got this idea I usually get whenever I play a game. Why don't I try to mod BC, I thought, then spent a couple of days thinking of a cool mod (And still trying to beat the freakin' game), first I thought of ship, weapons, etc. mods, but then I realized that there are many little mods for BC that just do their part and enhance the game usually not affecting other mods. I must say, that this is a thing for all the BC modders to be proud, because not many games offer this kind of modularity.

Bla, bla, bla. To make things short, my idea was to make an assimilation script that would add a button to the XO's menu that would say "Assimilate". Hitting that button a target enemy ship or base, would be transferred to the opposite team. Of course (Read: I'm not mental), you wouldn't be able to assimilate any hostile target, instead you would first need to damage the targets hull (Or a subsystem, though I still don't know which one.) then you could assimilate it.

Aha, here to the problem. Watching the scripts in BC and the scripts from many mods I belive this could be done, but to be honest I have no idea where to start, so any help, please?

P.S: Hmm, I also think its also possible to make custom assimilated ship textures using a second instance of the Skinning and Damaging Tool. (Though I plan this for a further version, if any.)

Mod already exists, Assimilation Beam by Wowbagger from BCS-TNG and is included in BCS:TB modpack.

*grin* also check with the BC Central forums. there seems to be plenty of guys there that need a helping hand. i'm a noob modder, myself. but I wanna play with the models more than I do the rather tedious scripting. I need a proper 3d program for free :P

Hmm, I used gmax for models. I think its still free, you just have to register to be able to download it. Blender is also great and its based on Python too. ( I prefer Blender :D)

gmax http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

Blender http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ (Warning! For Blender you will have to use the 2.6 version of Python. On 3.1 it gets very buggy, quite unworkable. Get Python here http://www.python.org/download/)

You may want to check out BCS-TNG. To get a feel for scripting in BC.:smokin: here is the link below...

This is not a support thread, BCS:TB has a support forum over at BCS-TNG. The readme states that this only works on Borg Ships. Your ship must have a borg race definition. If you wish to alter some ships to have a borg race def you can use the BCUT to edit ship plugin data. BCUT -> Plugin Editor -> Species -> BorgShipDef to specify it is a borg vessel.

Erm, already exists? Well, okay, this only means less work for me

It does but the problem is that it only changes ships from enemy\neutral to friendly. What you have suggested is to actually use the SDT to add assimilated textures. The idea is not plausible for one reason, assimilation textures need to be created for every ship copy, they cannot be generic. SDT is about swapping textures, so you must have a set of matching textures for every swapped part.

There was one idea a while back but I never got around in creating, due to lack of models. The idea is that you create a pack of generic borg assimilation parts which can be via python code attached onto the objects hull. I am a programmer not a modeling artist so this never got beyond the drawing board and testing phase.

If you are aiming towards improved AssimBeam this is what you should do instead.

Thanks guys for putting me in the right direction. I shall first review my Python skills and then I will slowly start to make custom scripts or improve the ones that already exist (only if I get their original creators blessing).

Hmmm. You can talk to the author and ask him to give you the rights to made addon to his mod. Posibbly when hit asimilation buton the ship will change his model with asimalated one. Sory for mu bad english, I'havent practice for a while.
