Never used Gmax, but IT IS expensive. Milkshape is cheaper(even if you buy the registered copy), but like the old saying goes you get what you pay for!!!

Gmax is for free...goto: http://www.discreet.com/gmax it basically is light-version of 3dsmax which indeed is very expen$ive... I do not think that it'd be fair to warez it...

if i may say.. start out with something free or cheap like milkshape.. get handy with it.. then if you wanna move to 3ds.. go for it.. all of them are pretty good.. they all get the job done..

GMax is a free version of 3ds max. It doesn't have all the functionality, but it is very good none the less. If you go to the Gmax homepage, there is a form you can fill in to petition for a plugin for the BC game. It may work, it may not, but I'd like it if they did release such a plugin as many simple ships can be made this way.

Milkshape is also a good program that chugs along nicely. It is a step up from GMax, but well below the standard of 3ds max, which is why 3ds max is so expensive. What is more, milkshape has its own plugin system to convert direct to .nifs. Unfortunately, it has problems with the high poly end of the market which GMax can easily handle. GMax also has the advantage of seamlessly converting many of the 3ds max formatted models available on the internet.

For a standalone starter pack, stick with milkshape. But keep GMax to one side for when we finally get plugins or whatever to make this a program for BC. The number of formats Milkshape can release in, it would be possible to make a good model in it, swap it over to GMax, then make a better, higher poly model for release.
