Not entirely sure if there's a quick and easy way. There probably is, and everyone except me knows it.

Search through the photoshop fonts until you find one that fits (it would be useful to have a sticky with things like star trek fonts around, maybe in one of the bcfiles tutorials, now found in their own little folder). Create a new transparent selection and align the letters and numbers to mimic the existing registry. Things can be resized, so start with big letters and numbers, align as accurately as possible, then reduce to an appropriate size.

Save alpha channel of the current .tga before altering anything!

Remove old registry. This can be done either by cloning (copy and paste maybe) bits of textures not covered by the registry, or by smoothing or erasing or filling in with a neutral color or a combination etc. Remember the registry removal must leave a clean panel that the new registry goes on.

Resize new registry to appropriate size, put on space vacated by old registry. If required, reload that saved alpha channel (you'll know almost immediately ingame if that has gone wrong - you will have either a bright white saucer or the wrong bits lit up). Save as new .tga and hope for the best.

This is only a first thought from an absolute novice, so don't put too much stock on it. Hopefully it will inspire someone better suited to answering the thing to put up a better set of instructions.

You will need to paint over the old registry by hand. Time consuming but worth it if you want a good result!! On a ship like the sov there is no real shortcut for this due to the shape of the saucer. On round ships you can copy and past a similar part of the hull ove rthe top.

With photoshop, the key is the rectangular marquee tool.

Select an area with the Marquee tool by drawing a rectangle about it. Go to edit and copy. Select the area you want to paste it into the same way. Then go to edit and 'paste into', this will paste the copied stuff as a selection that can be moved a bit to give a smoother result.

Again, do it at high zoom. The results will look better once you have zoomed out... only you will notice the old registry lying beneath...
