I recently got this game myself, and I do enjoy the basic campaign. However, I do admit it looks rather dated. I was wondering if there are any mods out there that would make the models more detailed without changing the gameplay? I would especially appreciate anything that improves the bridge graphics and character models, since the latter are quite blocky both in shape and animations.

Check out the front page's "Top 25 Downloads" and work your way from there.

No, I am not kidding. For those top downloads, the ones that I might use are NanoFX and Supermod 3, except they both include gameplay changes. NanoFX alters the way warp works, and Supermod includes "rebalancing" the ships. Looking around the files the Bridge Plugin looks good, but I can't tell what it does exactly. The Bridge Plugin Core readme says remarkably little on that subject.

edit: Hmm, going into 'Ships' section of the downloads rather than 'Mods' seems like it could be more fruitful. However, I'm bound to run into versions of the default in-game ships that have their stats altered. Maybe I'll have to learn how to use the modding tools and grab the graphics from mods while maintaining the default ship performance figures to get the end result I want.

If you are new to modding your BC install, here is some stuff you need to know...

* Latest Foundation | Bridge Commander Universal Tool (1.5.7.3) * Highly Recommended *

Foundation by Dasher42 is the reason we can modify Bridge Commander. This utility made by USS_Sovereign is modder friendly, can back up your install and has the latest Foundation files.

* NanoFX v.2.0 (Beta)

NanoFX is a Graphic mod that enhances explosions and allows for canon warp travel between stock & modded star systems. This includes running lights support for hardpointed ships and atmospheric effects for planets.

* BC 1.1 Patch

You will need this, because it's the last official update by Activision for Bridge Commander. The patch inclueds script corrections, bug fixes corrections from the original release. Some mods will not work without the 1.1 patch. http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/Bridge_Commander_Patch;2374

* Foundation Technologies (FTech) This is a ship weapons mod. This allows you to modify your ship to include features like Auto-Targeting, Refective shields ect. Though there are other weapons mods out there, this is the most definitive and up to date. http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/file/FTech_Foundation_Technologies_;84343

* SubMenu Mod

This modification allows for ships to be categorized by sub groupings/lists. This saves the player from having an overly extended selection list in Quickbattle.

*Bridge Plugin Core (Gold)

This mod uses bot, special effects, virtual object(s)and graphic animation supported on the bridge sets made by 3rd Era/Frontier productions, basically upgrading the bridges with custom made sets, to replace the stock sets in-game.

On the subject of Hardpoint/weapons balance in Bridge commander, these IMO are the best Hardpointers in the community. These authors works will provide balance to your install.

Starforce2 Elminster Laurelin c2x aka c2xtreme

On the BC Supermod v.3, that is for "Single Player" only. If you install that mod, it needs to be on another BC install. If you install it over a install modded for Quickbattle play, you run the risk of making the install unstable (prone to crashing). Also those ships are very high poly, and will push your RAM, if your PC is not up to the task.

You may want to check these mods out as well...
