How do you make a new kind of ship? I know how to change a ships capabilities and certain effects, but I do not know how to create the actual model and textures etc. etc. Is there a tool where you can take pieces of ships, like warp nacelles and put it all together? I would like to know both how to kitbash and create an original design.

Milkshape is a decent, free program.

But if you do have money to throw around then get paint shop pro or photoshop and milkshape. As for kitbashing, the models need to be in a useable format for what ever program you end up with. *no longer a contradictory statement*

Not true. I've gotten ships in without NifSkope. I only ever use it as a .nif file veiwer.

It wasn't a contradictory statement to begin with. Milkshape is easy to learn how to use. I've found Blender to be a bit of a b!7ch to learn personally, but thats after having learnt Milkshape, 3DS Max 3 and 9 and Radiant.

If you can get your hands on 3DS Max, I recommend that. Plus, ideally you need Max 3 to export. The other nif exporters are...buggy, to say the least!

Nifscope is not necessary. Milkshape has export to NIF plugins, as does max 3.1. Blender is nice if you can handle the learning curve. Max 7, photoshop cs and milkshape for my mesh and textures. The MPE for hardpoints, and the tactical display editor is all I use. Glad to see the interest. Pm me if you need any help. Happy modding, Pat.

I wish therer was something akin to the Age of Empires map editor lol. Or something where you could make the ship by putting together pieces and 'glueing' them together. Would be perfect for kitbashing and making new ships. Like you would have different race templates, then you have ship components, like Galaxy class port warp nacelle. Be as easy as legos then lol. Anyway, anyone know where I can find a good tutorial for using these 3d modelers? I tried to learn by experimentation with milkshape, and crashed it lol. Was testing it with the DYexcalibur model. The most I can do is change the views so the hull becomes a bunch of freaky colors lol.
