Greetings. I've generally a part-time player of Bridge Commander. I've gotten back into it in the last couple of weeks. I have installed the 1.1 patch and KM .9. I have also added some of the ships available for the game and this is where my problems start. First of all, 90% of the ships can only be added with something called BCMI or BCMP (No one seems to agree on what it's called.) that all indications show should have been installed with KM. However I cannot find either of them no matter how hard I look. It's not in the mutator selection, it's not in any of the game folders.

So I've added the ships that are simple unzip and move to the BC folder deals. However this has led to problems as well. The second time I added new ships I was unable to get into the game. I would start the program and the screen stayed black. I know my computer is slow but 15 minutes to load a game seems excessive. So I had to uninstall and reinstall everything, excluding the models I had just installed.

Silly me, I added some new ships this afternoon. After adding what seemed to be some sweet Ambassadors, refit Constitututions and Mirandas I started the game looking forward to some TOS/TMP/TNG mayhem. To my surprise, after getting into Quick Battles there was no option listed in the menus for QB set up. I could bring enemy ships in by using the Add Ships button but there was no button presented for QB set up. Also, all of the letters on the buttons were enlarged.

Oh, and I have never been able to access the quantum torpedoes on any ship equipped with them under any circumstances. So, I'll be uninstalling and debating whether to reinstall this game. No matter how careful I am in adding ships to this thing I wind up having to uninstall it. This will be the second time in a week.

Ok, I've had enough. I just finished uninstalling and reinstalling and adding only ships that I knew I could use. This time the sound is screwed. None of the selector buttons in Quick Battle have sound, red alert doesn't make a sound and none of the weapons make any sounds whatsoever.

Here's a list of the ships I put in.

Zambie Zan's Mirand Pack v1.0 Miranda_Pack_Patch psych0s_excelsior_pack v1.0 tmp_constitution_pack connie_pack fed_antontos_complete fed_surya_tos issgarth longbow nxfearless450m tos_asia

I don't know what the problem is and at this point I don't care. Everyone else seems to have no problem with these things according to the comments section. I've stuck to models that only require unzipping and drag and dropping of three folders.

ok, calm down, there's no reason to get excited, first of all, BCMP and BCMI are two different programs, BCMI, is a program for unpacking a certain type of mod file called a .Bcmod, BCMP, and the newer BCSMC can be used to import ships that do not have a Scripts/Custom/Ships PY file. As far as the black screen, that is a common error, and does not require a complete reinstall. Just get a console report and post it in a thread here, most of the time people like me can fix it.

For drag and drop ships, it is BCMP ( BCMP full version, Bridge Commander Downloads, Bridge Commander The Outdated Abyss )that is used to create plugins to allow ships to play (those ships that required it - some have plugins already made). BCMP has been superceeded by Bridge Commander Ship Menu Creator, Bridge Commander Downloads, Bridge Commander Mod Installers due to problems with the BCMP filechecker (do not be tempted to use).

BCMI is for unpacking ships in BCMI format (a type of customized winzip).

Neither BCMP nor BCMI come with KM as KM is a mod pack that already has everything installed in it already, whereas BCMP and BCMI are specific types of mod installers. All can be obtained from the top 25 downloads section of the front page of Bridge Commander, Bridge Commander Downloads - FileFront.com.

Sometimes when you stick in new ships, it switches off the mutators, so it appears quick battle's died. You just need to switch everything back on.

And having 90% of the sound die? What causes that? I stuck with ships that only needed to be unzipped and extracted into the proper folder for the simplicity. I'm not really interested in fooling around with 4 different programs to get done what could be done with a simple zip extraction. As far as I can tell most of the ships on offer seem to be some kind of cruel joke played on new/infrequent players of Bridge Commander. Almost without exception each and every one of them contains some kind of bug that completely screws the game and requires that everything be uninstalled in order to set matters right.

In fact, the more attractive the ships (i.e. the Excelsior pack, the Galaxy pack, the Miranda pack, etc.) the worse they screw up the game. This is what I get for allowing myself to enjoy something. And, of course, this just confirms what I've suspected all along: Activision is incapable of making a game that doesn't just suck in every way that matters.

As ACES said, calm down! The developers of the ships try their hardest to keep things bug-free, but that can be hard! With the sheer number and scope of mods out there, there are bound to be conflicts and thing requiring things requiring things ad infinitum, hell, sometimes things are just corrupted!. The best thing you can do at the moment it get a console report for your current install. Don't try reinstalling until people like ACES and Milleau can dignose the problem and work out where it's coming from. There is a thread around that explains how to get a console report.

And unfortunately, sometimes other programs are necessary to get things to work.

As for Activision, I think they created a winner with BC! The game has been around and thriving for, what, 5 years now?

Sorry to be crabby. I blame it on a crazy boss and an HR supervisor composed of pure evil.

the thing is, most of us here have been playing and modding this game for going on six years now, I personally have every one of the mods you have mentioned running on my system, and many more, but it takes lots of patience to get everything installed and working right. You can't just come blundering in and make a perfect install with no effort. so keep at it, BCSMC and BCMI are great resources for both installing and creating your own mods, and they are extremely easy to use; and when you get a black screen of death as we call it, just post a screen cap of the console report at this forum, there are tons of people here who can help, besides usually it is just a matter of one line of code, or a pair of conflicting files, causing all your problems. The console also works for weird errors, like your sound thing, so keep trying.

I appreciate the sentiment and I'm sure the game is lovely. The little bit I've played it makes it seem fun. However, I think I'll just stick with Orion Pirates. That's a game that can be easily modified and doesn't require what seems to be endless reinstalls and finicky adjustments.

Besides I have no clue what a console report is or where to find it. And from what you've said, even with that myriad of add-on programs for sticking in mods, it's still necessary to spend wodges of time correcting errors and issues. I'll just give Bridge Commander a miss for another 3 years and then look back into it. Maybe the extra time will serve to simplify making additions to the game to the point where, quite frankly, matters should already be after 6 years--with all due respect to everyone who makes modifications for Bridge Commander.
