As with my previous review of the rather excellent Fleet Ops, this is my own personal review, and as such carries both information and suggestions to any part which might help improve it. Also as before I'll split this review into several sections so that anyone wanting todownload it can get a better idea what to expect. I've no tried the v1.0 myself so there is no comparison between this and the previous version.
Part 1: Installation
Right then so after having spent about 5 minutes downloading the 14.78mb zip file, I unzip its contents and find that its a lovely manual installation!!! (I'm including a bit of sarcasm here). Now the problem with manual installations is once you've copied over all the necessary files its very difficult to back up every file thats likely to be replaced. Another very bad minus point to make here is the actuall zip file/folder structure hasn't been done correctly. You'll find that just unzipping the zip to its own folder will result in having all the SOD files in the main directory, so basically you'll have to spend time sorting out the files as theres no installer of any kind.
Immediate suggestion at this point is to check the folder layout and possibly find and use something like VISE install creator.
Part 2: General Execution
Oh the fun of finding working mechanics in a mod. Anyway, onto part 2.
Well after the initial problems with a poorly setup file layout for the installation, and manually transferring the files over, the game has zero crashes that I can find, and I went through the entire tech tree. There are a couple of minor niggles. 1) No splash screen. A real shame as this adds to the initialeye candy. 2) Replacement loading screen (the one with the progress bar across the bottom just after the MP setup screen). Although not important it would have been nice to see a replacement for this as well (more eyecandy). 3) Torpedo cruiser was missing its wireframe. (grey box indicates incorrect entry in the gui_global.spr file) 4) Voice Overs. Nice touch but one or two seemed a little longer than they should have been (normally around 5 seconds is about the standard, but usually less) 5) Low quality models. As it stands the mod could have certainly done with the default models being updated. Okay so this may have added a large amount of files to the zip and increased the filesize but still. 6) No new GUI for the dominion. Although not to important there was no new dominion gui. Seeing as this is only v1.1 perhaps if the chance arises then a new gui could be made an incorporated.
Part 3: Gameplay
The final section will, as before, deal directly with game play side of things.
Right then. To begin with, remember that this uses the default setup of any A2 map, so map selection can be extensive. An interesting selection of models, most of which have been "borrowed" from the various, already available downloads. Even though the models themselves are of semi low quality theres a good selection of new special weapons to be tried. One or two have been well introduced and suit those vessels they've been added to rather well (I'll leave you to find out what these additional specials are).
Whilst v1.1 of this mod does carry a couple of minor niggles, the mod plays well with no crashing problems (which is definately a plus). Its also good that the dominion is totally seperated for the other races, even if theres alot of non-canon models included. Anyway, with a bit of additional work (as I've suggested above) this could be an outstanding single racve mod. Its certainly making headwa as it goes.
VERDICT: 6/10 presentation and installation 8/10 game mechanics and setup 7.5/10 overall.
Any kind of a tc, even a single race one, can be alot of work (as I know from personal experience), but I would say, work at this mod. Once the few eyecandy items, installer are sorted this mod could be one of the best available.
;) ;) ;)
i agree, but i have encountered crashing problems. both while attacking the enemy base.
MaP you should do reviews for most BIG mods. I would never have gotten Fleet Ops if you haden't done the Reveiw.
yes, that's a good idea.
I love reading these things lol
Borg. Thats very strange. I played as both Dominion (still like those funky dominion scouts), and against them. In all I played four games. The mod runs fine and stable for me in all cases. Are you sure you installed all files into their correct directories?? All it takes is one file out of place as you know and poof!!!! Your game will give you that "Don't destroy me!!!!!! I can still make you happy!!!!" statement.
i've installed into the correct directories, as a matter of fact i just recovered from a crash. every time it happens it's when some ships are fighting. the game just shuts down.
it is probably crashing due to processor overload.try lowering the graphic settings.
