Please, is there an ACURATE tutorial somewhere that explains how to install and use the maps, models, skins and mods that you can download around here? I'm new to this and I tried to figure it out with the infos included in the readme file, and the info I gathered arourd here, but I didn't succeed.

Ex.: One said Mods must not be unziped to the base folder. They must be a separate folder under gamedata. OK but I can't see the mod in neither of my mod lists in setup (multiplayer and singleplayer).

I also tried a few new models, a new map, I failed again. Sure I miss some vital info. Can anyone help me, please?

Ps.: I have the patche 1.04 and run under Win 98. I also have the option to try it under Win 2K if OS is an issue.

ok u seen like a hell of a newbie so im gonna help u out, if u download a skin/model u [COLOR=crimson]MUST OPEN A MULTIPLAYER GAME[/COLOR] and select it from the skin selection on the game menu- this [COLOR=crimson]ONLY[/COLOR] works in multi tho and the server must have the skin in his/her base folder too, otherwise it wont show up. so u can either hope they downloaded the skin too or open up ur own multi game and select it there. models are exact;y the same.

maps however are different, they must be selected by the server upon his/her starting. u can also open multiplayer maps in sp by pressing ctl+` (next to 1) and typing devmap mapname

First, Thanks, 8_Balller, for you answer.

Well, I AM a newbie, but not to this point. I tried to set up a server on my own machine just to see the models, and the map too. I was supposing if I am the server, I could decide of the models allowed, but the new models didn't appear in the player selection menu. I tried a console command like 'model nameofthemodel' and after that I just typed 'model' to see if it had change. It changed but my 3rd person view displayed Kile model, which I suppose is the default. Note that my previous model, before the console command was stormtrooper. My conclusion is I am able to successfully change my model through console but I'm unable to correctly install a new model. Hum...

Also, I tried to start a server with the new map, just as a test, but it does not display in the map list.

I already explained my failure with a mod.

Is my system buggy or is it just me????

Update: Just an idea I got. Could it be the models I download that need some subtulties to work? I'll try some other.

I'm pretty familiar with Half-Life (a Q2 based engine) modding protocols but I know nothing of JK2 (Q3 based engine) modding.

open up ur base folder, its possible the model pk3s went into a subfolder. if they have, just make sure the pk3s make it umolested to base. NO SUBFOLDERS (sorry, i just like capitals)

if unzipping mods point it to the gamedata folder and make sure "Use folder names" is checked and click yes to any overwrite request.

when extracting skins highlight the pk3 file and extract to base folder

also make sure force player model is off and defer player is on

(sigh...) No. No subfolder in the 'base' folder. And all the pk3 files are right there.:confused: It puzzles me.

But maybe it's the model. Can youo suggest me just a skin that you know is working easily, by just installing its pk3 in 'base'? I would try this before to cry for help on Dev Tech support. :)

Are you sure your not extracting the pk3 to base?

Winzip knows what a pk3 is and can extract the contents as though it was a zip folder.

hmmmn han solo works, so does darth vader, have u tried opening ur OWN multiplayer game? as in hosting it? all i can say is too reinstall the game and try that

First, Thanks you all for your kind answers.

I found the bug. It was a nasty one. I had 2 JK2 folders! With different names, off course. One was obviously a bogus one, it was not the latest version and so, and my desktop icon didn't lead to it. But I didn't knew about that and had installed all my addons in the bogus folder. :o

OK. Laugh! But I really don't know how this "folder cloning" occured. I know it's not because of the demo, because I knew about the demo folder and it was on another drive. Anyway, I removed the bogus one and installed all my addons in the real JK2 folder, the right place, and FINALY it works!!!!:) :) :) :)

Thanks again. Without your help, I would be still seeking what I do wrong, when in fact I've done all right.

Have you by chance recently upgraded to windows XP and run a fresh instalation?

I did that upgrading from 98 some time back and it didn't remove old files just created duplicates when installed new games.

Just a thought.
