ok, now lets trust the expert on this one,;)
heres the case, EF single player on windows XP has 0 problems with brightness EF holomach on Windows XP has brightness issues. the slider will move, but only with lots of clicking at one end of the slider, and the chances of reaching the desiered level is practacly NONE.
there are no updates. compatability mode will not fix the issue.
so, RixStix553, it obviusly works every time in ef SP, but, the only HM solution is those mentioned by EXiT and x7r@c7
So my advice, is take there advice. full stop

It seems like everyone who has Windows XP has this problem. I had it too when I put EF on to my windows XP but try it this way
If you don't have autoexec.cfg file create one by doing into notepad and type this out:
r_ignorehwgamma "0" r_overBrightBits "0"
once you have completed this save it as "autoexec.cfg" (including the quotation marks.
File trekker I had a brightness problem with both sp and holomatch because I didn't have and autoexec file but once I created one it was fine.
