Hi folks, I just recently got ST EF 1, played it, loved it and then got on to the internet to see if there was anything else that gave some game play. I came across mods, maps amongst many other files- in fact there seems to be heaps of mods out there.
My questions are: what's the difference between a mod and a map, after downloading where do you unzip them to, then how do you use them?
I downloaded a few that I've gotten working but I'm not sure why some have worked and others haven't.
I've searched high and low for a begginers guide to mods and maps etc and how to use them but have found nothing!
If anyone could be so kind as to help out a newbie, it would be much appreciated.
A map is just that. A map that someone created using the map making tools that Raven provided. A mod, on the other hand, usually changes different elements in the game, such as adding new weapons, changing textuures, or add new characters. In the files that you download (probably a .zip file), there will be a file with the extension .pk3. These PK3 files are just like zip files and can actually be opened like a zip file in any program that uses zip files. The PK3 files hold all of the info the game uses, like game models, sound files, game scripts, maps, and textures.
To use a PK3 in the game, they need to be in your BaseEF folder in the game directory. If you installed EF to the default directory, this would be C:\Program Files\Raven\Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force\BaseEF
The PK3 files in this folder are activated by the game alphabetically. So any files in a PK3 that starts with the letter z would override any files with the same name in a PK3 that started with the letter a. So if you download a mod and it doesn't do what it said it should, maybe you need to change the name of the PK3. For example, say you had a PK3 called 'mymod.pk3'. You could change the name to 'z-mymod.pk3', and it would be loaded last.
To open maps in EF Single Player, just open the console in the game by pressing ~, and type 'map x' (without quotes, x being the map name) and press enter. In Holomatch, the map should be listed in the list of maps. A mod should be activated automatically, but if not, see the last paragraph.
If you don't know the name of the maps in a pk3 file, you can open the pk3 file to find out. I suggest using a program called PakScape (which can be found on EFFiles.com) to open pk3s. In the pk3, just open the map folder, and you will see the maps in the file, which have a .bsp extension. When you open the maps in the game, don't type the .bsp extension.

I am relatively new to mods and maps and stuff. Is there any code i am supposed to put in somewhere to enable bots on a map that doesn't come with it?
If there's no bot support on a map, you won't be able to use bots at all. The only way to enable bot support is to make an aas file, but for a person new to modding, that can be rather difficult. In general, if a map doesn't have bot support, it probably wasn't meant to have bots in the first place. Just be thankful that there are bots in Elite Force, because most games don't have bots, only human players.
