Is it possible that Palpatine was initially not meant to be the Emperor at all in the early drafts of the prequel trilogy? Well, let me examine what I've seen from a draft of the script.

Palpatine was described as a thin, KINDLY man. And in EP2, when he was Supreme Chancellor, he was stated in the script to be extremely reluctant (with many more lines rejecting.) to have Emergency Powers. And at the ending, with the clone troopers marching and assembling scene, his expression was said to be deeply sad. However, we must remember this is a movie script. The actual viewers of the movie wouldn't be able to see it. Then, if he was truely an evil character, I don't see any reason why the script can't use another word to express Palpatine's expression. For example, it might say 'faked sadness.' or 'hidden satisfaction.'. Maybe this will make the expression more genuine?

In the earlier drafts, Dooku called the Chancellor 'incompetent'. And he NEVER mentioned to Obi-Wan that 'the Dark Lord of the Sith is in control of the Senate'. I did a search on the name 'Darth Sidious' on the script, and it was only found at the end, where Sidious would say 'Welcome home, Lord tyrannus'.

Oh, and he never told Anakin that he thought he was more powerful than Master Yoda. No, he didn't tell him that.

The script, however, did mention red clad royal guards... hmm...

Maybe George Lucas decided initially not to write those lines mentioned above so as to make Palpatine seem even friendlier, than suddenly became evil?

Anything to say about this?

hmmm maybe some spontaneous changes? neways, the sad looking palpatine is described like that in the script cuz the actor had to look sad, not to look fakely sad. hmmm

Maybe they want it to be more convincing. Yes, that is probable, but that is a script, not a novelisation for us. The actors themselves would know how to improvise. Besides, the Emperor never got a name.

Plus, like I said, the Chancellor (Palpatine) never told Anakin how powerful he was. That was supposed to make Anakin believe he truly was invincible and more powerful than Yoda.

I'm sure the 'deeply sad' part was a genuine feeling... besides, Dooku, never told mentioned to Obi-wan about the Darth controlling the Senate. It is possible he didn't say it because the Darth really isn't in control.

I don't think the film crew follows the script very strictly... some scenes get cut, some get modified (when lucas wants to change something).

the script to me doesnt seem to be very reliable since last min changes are ussually made on scene by the director. i think hes just trying to trick us. doesnt the same person play sidious as palpatine and palpatine prollie isnt just a coincedence that the emporor and the supream chancellor have in common

I'm sure they started having similarities ONLY after the scriptwriters decide to make palpatine the emperor. Oh well...

there ARE ppl that care. btw I agree to what Yellow said... they don't follow the script exactly. On the Ep2 DVD you can see lucas doing some last-minute changes.

Yeah... sometimes I pay so much attention to detail, I completely ignored the big picture. Believe me, this 'behavior' has given quite a lot of problems...
