If you've watched Episode 1, you might have noticed a Gran (those three eyed, brown skinned species. Click on that link to know about them, in case you'te wondering.) senator speaking in Basic in the scene where Amidala proposed a Vote of No Confidence. To be precise, the senator is called Aks Moe. Now, from what I've known, and shown in JK2 and Episode 2 and 6(Reeyees), they speak only in a deep, groaning voice in their own language (Own language? Can't verify the language, since the voice is too deep.). Now, however, we heard Mr. Moe speaking in Basic. How, can this be? Can this be a mistake?

Well, I have attributed this to a translation ability of the galatic senate's rotunda. That is why you heard him speaking in a chipmunk voice instead of a normal voice. It is the doing of the translator. So, all voices translated will be in this particular chipmunk frequency.

But what about Ask Aak, the gran who spoke to Bail Organa in Palpatine's quarters, spoke in the same, deep groaning voice. Now, Palpatine is a Chancellor, and is bound to receive visits some species, obviously speaking different languages. So, why wasn't there a translator to translate the words spoken by Ask Aak? Why did he speak in the deep voice just like any other Gran? And if it wasn't a translator working in the Senate, and Mr. Moe did indeed speak Basic on his own, how do we explain the high pitched voice? Can grans speak in such pitches, which is so much different from the deep low voices common of Gran? This possibility seem highly unlikely.

But one might say Lucas might be doing this deliberately so as not to affect the gravity of that scene. Having a deep, groaning (and, really hilarious.) voice will ruin the scene.

Any comments? As usual, only people who're interested. Oh, and don't go off topic, like the Yoda Vs Palpatine thread/poll.

That is interesting. Also, there is a gran in EP1 in the pod race. But, no disrecpect, but there IS a point where we analyze this stuff, and go "Dont we have n e better things to do with our time? Like play Some more outcast?" I am interested, but it gets to a point where we just go "Oh, ok, thats interesting", but its obviously the way Lucas (Almighty God) wanted it to be, so I say, sit back and enjoy.:agreed:

well, i think they have some sort of....quick-time-translator, so their voice will be converted into basic, as basic is something like english in the core worlds..

Lets be proud of starwars lets not look at the stuff that went wrong sound and stuff watch it from another point of view and you will see it as a brilliant movie when you think of george lucas how did he make the second three then make the first three? well amazing is it not theres more cool and good things about starwars than bad so lets enjoy the cool things about starwars not about the stuff that went wrong.

If your making your own movie then this would be good but there would be no point in a thread just say to yourself i will not make the same mistake. Then you could make yours better!;)

Good luck

I think it was a translator thing in his little floating 'booth'. Lol, not everyone gets subtitles when an alien talks.

Just because you never heard one speak in a high pitched voice before, doesn't mean they can't... unless you've read something somewhere which canonly states that their biology simply won't allow them to... I know of such an example. A really butch guy, the kind that you expect to win a lorry-pulling contest... I met him, expected him to have an unbearably deep voice. He opened his mouth, spoke like a kid girl. I probably went red holidng in the laughter. It might be common for them to speak in a low voice, doesn't mean you can't have the odd freak (pardon me anyone with some sort of high-pitched speech impediment) that doesn't. Maybe their voices go really high pitched when they speak in basic. Maybe thats why not many (one) Grans bother to learn it... they're too embarrassed or something :S.

My copy of Ep1 is really bad quality... I got into SW just before Ep2 came out, and haven't been able to find Ep1 on sale on DVD near me. Amazon are out of stock all the time, or something like that. So mines recorded of the TV. Can't make out his lips well enough to see if its in sync or not, I'm afraid.

The contrast between the two pitches is just too large! We had two examples, with even more in JK2 (ok, not canon, but clearly this is the way they speak.), of Grans speaking in this groaning, deep voice. But Mr. Moe spoke in a high pitch voice! If they are capable of speaking in such a high pitch, wouldn't the other Senator, Mr. Aak, speak in a higher tone?

Oh, there were subtitles for the EP2 Gran. But my copy didn't have them.
