What are the PC system requirements?

  • Windows XP (Home, Media Center or Pro Editions) with Service Pack 2
  • DirectX Version 9.0c
  • Intel Pentium 4 (2.66ghz or higher) or AMD Athlon XP 2800+ or higher
  • DX9 compatible AGP 8X or PCI Express video card, 128 MB VRAM, Pixel Shader 1.4
  • 16-bit Direct Sound compatible sound card, speakers or headphones required for audio
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 5 GB free space
  • LAN or Broadband connection (DSL or Cable Modem) for Multiplayer
  • Windows compatible Keyboard & Mouse

Personally, the Processor makes little sense to me. Let's put this in perspective of another new game I shall also be getting... Battlefield 2142 has similar requirements except the processor is 1.7ghz. Now I don't want to hear the excuse, "well, not as much happens", because it's obvious as much will be going on on-screen...but is this just a "step-ahead" as mentioned on the Star Trek forums or just a bad mistake which will rule people out of buying the game? I for one am less inclined to play it, knowing my processor is going to have merry-hell working barely. What are your thoughts on this? Am I entirely wrong? Am I behind in tech, or is there something wrong with that?

Most newer games have don't even have specs this high (that i've seen so far, although i'm sure thats going to change with the newer versions of games), although Tomb Raider Legends has for HD Space required 9.9GB. The only thing that i could really think of is its similar to the XBOX360 version but i doubt that would be the reason.

One annoying thing is though most specs don't account for Dual Core Intel or AMD X2 processors.

Are those the Required specs or the recommended specs?

I have no idea. I would hazard a guess saying that the processor would only make sense as these being the recommended...but I wouldn't rule it out being minimum either...wish they could make it a wee bit clearer.

What the heck are people doing with the processor to need that much power? It's not like the stats have become anymore complicated, the graphics are handled by the graphics card, even physics isn't that intensive. Personally I think it's just sloppy programming, years ago we'd weed out and tighten things up to run on a proper budget of resources, now there's such an abundance no-one bothers and a lot of stuff goes to waste.

I've got a feeling that these are reccomended, and not minimum. And, minumum specs are never the true minimum.

Anyone know what a AMD Sempron 3000+ processor is like compared to the AMD Athlon XP 2800+
