I recently decided to give this game a try again after initially playing it when it was first released. The first time I played it I became bored very quickly and never even finished the single player campaign. I thought now, after some time and a million mods later I would reinstall it (especially since I can no longer play Klingon Academy with my new rig) and see if it had gotten any better. Sadly, it has but not by much.

I have been playing Trek PC games since the old DOS days of The Kobayashi Alternative up through Legacy. My all time favorite is still KA - I'd still be playing it now if I could. Anyway, here are my gripes.

The stock version of this game blows chunks, I can't believe they would release such crap. If it weren't for the conversion mods then this game wouldn't even be littering up my hard drive again.

1) Subsystem targeting just plain sucks. It's hit or miss if the controls will work and just too many key strokes and mouse clicks to use it. If the thing actually worked the way the manual states it would be one thing but it's actually quite useless. Too bad they can't come up with a mod for this.

2) Ship control is awful. i prefer the 'ol joystick method but even BC was better than this. The auto pilot never keeps the enemy in the main weapons arc and mostly just makes lazy, slow turns that lets the enemy pound you. Steering the ship manually and trying to fire at the same time is very difficult and really takes the fun out of the game.

3) Ship damage effects. Wow - for a game that even stock has beautiful models the damage effects are horrible. Not just the really bad damage textures, but also the fact than when a nacelle or other part is seen being blown off, it's still there. I blew a nacelle off of a Connie, saw it start to float away and magically the ship still had both nacelles. Man, it just looks lame.

4) Stock quick battle sucks. Not even fun to play. You can't select a specific enemy ship, and the enemy always chooses the strongest ship in the Era - it's just a very lame.

I hate to always keep bring up KA for comparisons but this 10 (?) year old game does each of these things much better and even that game didn't live up to it's full potential. That being said, the UU Mod is awesome, especially the Historical Battles and the One on One.

While I have enjoyed playing this game again because of this mod and look forward to the next version, I can't help but think what this game could have been. A few simple things like better ship and targeting control (press key, click mouse, press key, look for circle, try to click icon, press key again - all while you're getting blasted) and damage effects and a decent Quick Battle mode would have done wonders, IMO.

Anyway, thanks to all the modders and especially the UU team - you guys rock!

For the most part you are right, the stock version stucked! And the mods didn't come fast enough to save the game. To be honest they should of kept working on it a little longer, but they were pressured to release early.

As far as game play goes, remember this game started out as a console game first. When I play I use a xbox controller and never have a problem. Also remember this is hands on space combat unlike BC and KA you have to control the ship yourself, not let the computer do all the work for you.

I have KA myself and your right about the damage text. they were alot better, but I always thought the controls were to sloppy. But the game was very in-depth when it came to commanding a starship and thats what I always liked about the game. The only problem I had was managing the systems while piloting the ship.

I will say this though, in my opinion BC was the worst stock game for these reasons:

1) The Fed. weapons and shields were wrong

2) Not enough ships per race

3) ship models and textures were off

4) they made the galaxy class ship feel like a frigate.

But like I said that's just my opinion, most won't agree but the game didn't get at all good until someone made a mod for it.

I also think the stock version of legacy was better on the 360. The ships looked better and the nacelles broke away from the ship when damaged. But then one of the developers created an update that gave the 360 version all the problems and bugs that the pc version was released with.

That makes sense now that you say it was a console game first. If you could fly the ship with a joystick on the pC it would be a whole lot better. It's just too hard to use the keyboard and then manage the weapons - takes the fun out of it.

You are 100% right about BC. That game left my hard drive in about a week. Worst game ever! I am enjoying Legacy a lot more now with the recent UU Tools and STL manager - at least we can now choose what ships to fly against in Quick Battle.

I'm still hoping that the new Trek movie will generate some interest in making a new Trek game title for the PC that will look as good as Legacy and be as much fun to play as KA. :)

I think your right-on about that, they need a game that looks good and the gamers have no problem playing. But that isn't going to happen anytime soon, all they care about now is rushing everything or being the next big thing on store shelves.

Which tool did you use to choose the ships you fly against?

Mod teams are rooting out techniques to improve it though. eg. Keys of Legacy

Ranger, I hear ya, sad but true. I used the STL Manager beta program - it works great. Also, the newest Tools for UU lets you choose what race to play in their One on One - which is very cool.

Yeah, Acid, the mod team rock! :rock:I have keys of legacy and the UU mod - the only 2 reasons that I am currently playing Legacy.
