HI ALL!!!! I finally finished making my first model (well the first part anyway) it's going to be a chinese motorcycle unit.
I have just finished the motorcycle! all i have left (moddeling-wise is the guy who will ride it) (i also need a skin animations and INI)
anyway i pretty excited because this is my first model ever (not just for generals)
PLZ PLZ PLZ PLZ someone tell me how to take a picture of a model in gmax so i can post it here, becuase im probably really stupid, or just tired, and i cant figure it out!!!
PLZ RESPOND ASAP
THX IN ADVANCE
U cant render in gmax... take a pic with Printscreen :|
thx for the help :)
anyway here it is
also i have no clue what the poly count is because i dont know how to find a button that will tell me !! lol please someone tell me how to find polycount.
I am also almost done an upgrade that you can buy for ther bike which is one of those side attatched cart things, except this one has a gatling gun mounted in it :)
also does anyone know if it's possible to import the tank hunter model into gmax and then heavily modify it to be my rider, or do i have to make the model from scratch
if it is possible what programs do i need
To get a poly count go to utilities, the hammer icon. and there should be a box saying "polygon counter", it's near the bottom of the list.click on it, and it displays a count of all the polys in the scene, and the polys of the selected object. For Generals I think you want under 550 polys, probably about 400. My latest tank model has 354 so far.
There is a gamepack called renx, it's made by EA, and it was meant for C&C Renegade, but it's very useful fot Generals, because you can export *.w3d and there are some other plugins.
I have heard of w3d importers, and am currently looking for one myself. I think I read that one comes with renx, but I can't find it. I have a couple, from c&c sites but they don't work
ya i also have renx, and it does come with a w3d importer but i dont undertand what a w3d importer is or does. are there any tutorials on this?
also please someone tell me if its possible to import general's models into gmax, because if not i will start making the model for the man
sry that i keep doing reply after reply....
but i jsut tried to do a polycount and there something seriously wrong, it told me my poly count is 46 000 and something, so i was like wholy shit, then i tired just clicking on a normal cylinder and it said it has a polycount of 216
how is that possible??? an unmodified cylinder has a higher polycount then most full models???
plz help im so confused
DUH! That bike is way too high poly for C&C LOL!!!!!
Look at the Paladin tank for example... if u zoom in its just a box with a few more things attached to it. About the Cylinder; it probably has too much sides, if u'd use 9 sides, and 1 segment it will be like 25 polys
If you want to make a reasonable model for C&C Generals, create it in 3d Studio Max 5! Because in Gmax or Renx u canT use MultiRes, that's the util from 3dsmax to REDUCE the polys. It can reduce like 75% of the polys without letting the model change ANYTHING (from the outside).
(btw, u can also check the polys just by pushing right button at the object, and then push Properties ;) )
thx thomas where do you download 3d studio max? ive looked everywhere for it!!!
plus is there a way in gmax to turn something from an editable mesh back into a normal shape, because most of my cylinders i just noticed are editable mesh and so i cant change the radius or sides or anything, and also do you know if theres a tool like what you jsut said in gmax?
and last thing how do you find the generals models to look at? where are they under?
The w3d files are what Generals reads as models, they are what you put into generals, you will also need bones for your bike. There is a tutorial on how to get a model from gmax to generals at these forums:
You can extract the w3d files from the .big files in your generals directory, get a .big extractor, they're like 400k really small. I havn't found an importer, so i don't know if this is all completely true.
It is possible that you have that many poly's, your model does look smooth, to optimise; Select the object/objects you want to optimise, go to the modifier panel, drop down the modifier list, and under mesh editing click on optimize.
You can set the bias etc for it too, so it doesn't change the shape of the object too much.
It is possible to have lots of polys on a cylinder that looks the same as a cylinder that has half the number, if you press f4, then it highlights edges, you can then see how many edges your shapes have.
You might need to decrease the hight/length/width segments of your objects as you create them, you could have ones that are no use, as they don't ever move.
