I'm brand new to this forum so firstly let me just say HI ALL!!!
I have just recently downloaded GMAX and started experimenting with moddeling, now, i feel pretty comfortable making models and i have begun making a motorcycle unit for China. This is the first time I have EVER tried moddeling, and I have never before tried modding a game in any way (ie. skinning, INI editing) anyway so i really need help. before i work more on this model i need to know 1, whats the polcount for the average general model, 2 i heard you need "bones" for animating, what are those 3 do you know if I should make the entire model 1 peice, or should i keep it as many diffrent shapes. Thats all for now Thx in advance for any help
average poly is < 200
the bones are where stuff spawns from, like smoke or projectiles, or also turrets, load up a existing model with the w3d.ms importer script (don't know exactly where to get it anymore) and you can see what westwood did for the bones stuff. all vehicles can be animated by using gmax's animate feature and then saving as a animated model. if you want other anims then repeated stuff ( radar dishes etc) there's a lot of ini editing to be done. infantry is currently impossible to to make unless you want to animate it all by hand
try to simplify your model as much as possible, don't have faces in the middle of objects (do boolean unions or delete faces) and try to make it as few objects as possible, so basically the housecolor as one object and the chassisas another , animated parts are okay to be separate objects too
Thx for your help just 1 thing, i dont understand what you mean by deleate faces, also i was thinking that the rider of the motorcycle (havnt started the riders model yet) would fire a hand held uzi-like gun and would turn his arm in diffrent directions to shoot, is that possible? because you were saying that animating infintry is impossible so far. Because its going to be hard to make a biker if i cant animate the rider :(
