I was looking into modifying the game and came here. I see that I am in way over my head. I want to start small with simply changing the attributes of some units and buildings. Things like Cost, Creation Time, Hit Points, etc. From the site I downloaded the FinalBIG editor. I can open the INI.big file. I extract the .ini I want to edit (e.g. DATA\INI\Object\FactionBuilding.ini) and open it with a hexeditor (I am using XV132, its freeware). I can find attributes, like BuildCost, and can change it and save the file. Then, in the FinalBIG editor I delete the old .ini file and replace it with my newly modified .ini file. Unfortunaely, when I start the game, none of my changes have taken effect. I have read numerous posts and have picked up on the fact that I might need to be editing more than just the one file. Can anyone please explain to me the process I should be following? Am I even on the right track? If there is a solid answer for this alread posted, please point me in that direction. Thanks.

Thanks Garrick, I didn't know I could use wordpad, and yes, it is much simpler to use. Again, I am running into the same problem. I can change some attributes (eg. changed patriot from builcost = 1000 to builcost = 0800) and save the file. I then view just to be sure, and my changes are still there. Then I start the game and none of the changes have taken effect. When I close the game and view the file I changed I see that it has been changed again back to the original settings. Seems to me I'm missing something somewhere. I'm only changing FactionBuilding.ini. Should I be looking at another file as well?

You can't delete the file in the INI.big file. You need to extract the file from the .big to this folder: *generalsfolder*/Data/INI/Objects/HERE. Now you can edit your ini you extracted with notepad or something and save it. Then it automaticaly overwrites the file in the INI.big. So don't change something in the .big file!

Yes! Awesome! Finally got it to work. I didn't realize that I actually had to create the /INI and /Object folders. I did that and then put my modified FactionBuilding.ini file in there and it worked like a charm. Thanks very much.
